Operating Temperature '92

A few days ago my 300zx radiator exploted. motor verheting happens & I already change it. Two days later the Dealer told me water temperature readings were very high (240F). I order to chage the temperature sensor, and now the temp niddle appears in the lower position. Any idea, anybody knows what's the normal niddle position or temperature?. (and why my radiator could exploted?)

Radiator condition??? Excess pressure should get released via the radiator cap! I'd suggest getting a new one matey.

Normal running temperature is 84 degrees C. Plus or minus a few degrees depending on driving conditions/outside temperature/sitting in traffic etc.

Temp guage needle should sit just below halfway mark and very rarely fluctuates which is a trate of Japanese cars. My Supra used to do the same, even if you'd been sat in traffic inching along in Birmingham on a hot summers day the needle would never deviate from halfway!

So this is quite a good thing, because if it ever does you can guarantee something is seriously wrong!!!

Normal operating temperature for the TT Z should be around 80c - 100c depending on outside temperature and how hard you are driving and AC on/off.

If, on occasion, 110c is reached then the engine fan switches to double speed.

The dealer should be able to tell you the reason for overheating. It could be something as serious as head gasket failure or maybe water pump failure.

According to my Techtom the water temp in my car has never gone above 84C, even after sitting in London traffic for over an hour one afternoon last Summer. On a cool morning it is nearer 78 C. Of course this is no guarantee that the temp is accurate, but it does agree (roughly) with the gauge and with other cars I have seen.

I agree Mr. P, my Techtom reads the same. Normal driving it sits at 84 degrees C. Have seen it read 91 but that was after I'd switched the car off then come back to it a few minutes later.

Ah, if were talking techtom readings then mine shows 82deg C, even on a hot day running it large wink.gif

My previous Z.....tuned by SE ran red hot and the techtom would register over 100c.

Thank's to all. Changed the radiator & Coolant Temp Sensor, 5 days after the gauge never pass more than 1/3 of the reading (That must be 60-70C). At the first I was afraid about some bad conection in the coolant temp. sensor.(!?)

I ask to the dealer about of the overheating and he told me It could be as head gasket failure (And bill me 700USD Labor). We ride the car by 30 miles in the trafic & check the computer with the consult. the temperature reached 115C (2/3 reading)but after few minutes recover to 93C. (I didn't think it is a Head problem)Thats why I ask to change the senson. (Now I think the reading appears be too low). The gauge don't move until 15 minutes runing (Just a little, that's normal?). Here Mexico weather is 17C in the mornings.

Steve,in the another Hand, how you can detect a head gasket failure, before take off the motor? (any Simptoms?)

Thanks Again.

Gus,

You need to pressure test the cooling system.

You could also do a power balance test using nissan consult and a compression test on all cylinders.
