Gary ime in the middle of milling some cast iron and it keeps taking the edge off my end mills:sad:..do i mill fast or slow and do i mill it dry or wet??? whats the given method bud as ime running out of end mills:mad2:

mill it dry. slow down the rpm , tbh its best to use a carbide insert tool as cast iron supposed to have a negative rake on the tool.. this is why your high speed steel cutters are burning out, also be careful as it can snag and lift out of the vice!!

out of curiosity what milling machine are you using ?

collet type?

number of flutes on the cutter?

rpm your currently machining at?

feed?

if your dwelling to much it will also burn out the cutter.

if you only have hss cutters add a drop of oil to cool the tool edge but it will get smoky....

ahh cheers Gaz...thought ide mill fast so as not to snag like you said as when i used the slow speed it was dragging it into the cutter:mad2: maybe a was going a bit deep mate..ok ile try your advice, will a fly cutter with a piece of carbide be ok??

if its solid...... but just take the edge off the tool.

dont climb mill it with a sharp cutter it will try and pull you in.

its an old english mill/drill jobbie but the head and quill is solid with no rattles or chatter, bench mounted about 4 ft high, using a collet chuck and flute number ive no idea..ime hand feeding too since it was pulling into the cutter and i had no controll

how many cutting edges (flutes) does the cutter have? the more the better to stop snagging.

conventional mill it rather then climb mill it, climb milling will gather speed in cast iron causing it to snag..
