12.5 MPG!

I've just become the owner of 1989 TT import.

It goes great, the engine's a little bit rougher than I expected but it has done 80K miles. However i've just filled the tank again after using a full tank and I've calculated the MPG, after picking myself off the ground and checking my calculations again I got a figure of 12.5MPG. There's no obvious signs of a petrol leak although I did notice a petrol smell from the exhaust. My first guess is that i'ts running mega rich hence the engine roughness. Any ideas how to where to start anyone.

P.S. I also checked the ECU and there are no error codes.

Peter sound like a good service would be a good place to start, check the air filters out bet they are blocked. Also what history have you when was plugs etc changed?

Where are you? can do you a service assessment if you want.

Bastard, that is about 0.5mpg more than I get!

Could be the coolent temp sensor, I had a similar problem about 2 years ago when petrol suddenly seemed not to be lasting very long . Found that the coolent temp sensor to the ecu had dirty connections which i suppose made the engine think it was still cold and so kept throwing the petrol in. Cleaning the connections fixed it for me. Hope this helps.

I got 16.8mpg this week and that was mostly driving like a granny on short journeys except when hooligan mode took over when a very smart 3000gto decided to attempt to pass me and then had to forget it and pull back in again. Heck if the new BMW 7 series at 2 tonnes with 300+bhp can get 30+mpg why the hell cant a 1.55 tonne Z? Its a modern design engine!

Thanks for the replies to my first posting.Hopefully I'll get a chance to have a look at the engine this weekend, I'll start at the air filters and the coolant temp sensor.(won't a faulty sensor give an ECU error?). Got no history with the car but first thing I did was to change the plugs, the old ones looked in very good condition.

Jeff , I'm in Livingston, Scotland. I'm hoping to do most of the servicing on the car myself and learn a bit in the process, however, I've had a look at your website and your prices are pretty good.Obviously petrol consumption is related to how you drive but I get 18-20 MPG out of an (don't know if I'm allowed to use this sort of language here) '89 RX7 on the same sort of journeys!

joy's of a zed

i got mine in dec 2001

was buying a house but have used all money on fuel , biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif but what the hell ,lol

they are thirsty but at the end of the day you are a zed owner now , accept the fueling cost and enjoy then zed (best bit of advice i can give ) cos chances are you are already enjoying the best super car you have ever owned! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Is the car totally standard?

I get about the same but I have a very heavy right foot and a few mods!

Used to get about 19 to the gallon until I fitted the boost upgrade and new ECU...

But surely that cant be right.

I get 17mpg and I think is shit compaired to to others who get 22-25.

My car aint modded only Mongoose exahust.

I usually average around 24mpg. Did get 29 once but that was driving like a granny and mind numbingly dull.

How do, folks. For years and years I kept a diary of the fuel consumption of every car I ever had (listen - I was a perennially broke student needing to spend money on beer,OK?).

When I got the ZX, I stopped. People ask me what mpg I get and I say who cares - I'm having too much fun.

(Actually, out of curiosity I did do it a couple of times on boring motorway journeys and got 24 ish mpg - but then I'm so boring I don't have any points on my licence yet.)
