For those of you who know diesels, what's the situation regarding the life of turbos on these cars and how much can they cost to replace?

We know that turbos on petrol cars can be troublesome (especially on older cars), but with diesels so popular and having such high mileages, is the situation the same or do they last much longer?

Thanks.

On a well serviced Tdi, with no mods, you can easily expect to see 250/300K with no issues.

As long as they get fed clean oil and clean air they last a long time.

Most failures I have seen are on sheds that the owner has cut corners on servicing.

As long as you don't boot the nuts off it from cold every morning, and don't pull up at your destination and turn off the engine with the turbo still spinning down, you will be fine.

Its more about the Fuel Injection pump failure on diesels you need to watch out for, usually resulting in £1k+ bills for replacement. Its mounted on the engine in a diesel, and injects fuel into the cylinders and has to deal with the pressure and heat conditions. Its the most complicated part of a diesel engine and its most common failure item.

As Derek said, make sure you do regular oil services. I do 6 month oil services and I never do more than 3k miles
