hyd lifters

my engine has been stood 20 months in oil which was heavily contaminated with water, during the rebuild ive replaced a con rod(hydro locked) but have found that hydr lifters are keeping valves slightly open.valve seats are good & hydr lifters are drained of all oil & can be compressed easily in fingers.4 valves remain open which shut when cams are removed. darent take a few thou off valve top, any ideas

Clarify the four valves open bit, reason I say that is the engine is never going to have all valves close at any time anyhow, as the timing of the cams and lobes and relative crank position will mean at least some of the valves will be open at any one time.(Need more info)

the valve is open by .1mm with the cam lobe pointing away from valve. the lifter appears to be keeping it open although the lifter has been completeley compresssed!

sounds about right that the lifter would keep the valves open slightly.

on the cylinder they are open on, are a pair opened equally? e.g. i mean is one open 1mm and the other 2mm?

if they are equal it will be about right. put some prelube on all the moving parts of the head (i.e. cams, cam housings, lifters) and turn the cams by hand using a spanner or something and do a couple of cycles with it. see what the result of this is.

hope it helps .....

In the service manual it tels you not to put the lifters on their side or upside down as this can cause a air lock. this might be your problem that some have air locks?

have a look at the manual?

Yes Valve lifters are hydraulic - and we all know how hydraulic system dislike air bubbles which is the reason you have to take such great care when dismantling them.

Ashy you can just replace that one valve lifter and see if the problem goes away - The Valve lifters should not hold the valves open for any significant amount of time once the lobe has broken contact with the 'lash pad' New ones cost about 16 quid from Nissan im not sure about the set up and install procedure off the top of my head but it is detailed in the manual.
