belt squealing

The belt appears to be squealing on my 300zx NA

It does it when you first start the car, through first and into second then clears higher up the rev range. These symptoms I've come across on other cars but the belt also squeals when you go back into second or first, even after a long run. I've noticed the power steering sometimes goes heavy too at low revs manouvering but dont know if this is necessarily at the same time.

Is this likely to just need a new belt or has anyone else had similar issues?

Do you have your heater/climate on, when this happens?

My belt needs tightening on the aircon pump and it squeals occasionally on start up when wet if the heater is on.

doh lets hope its not the pump then! thanks for the input guys I'll have a poke arouund later on.

Groover - yes the heater is on, I'll have to check that, thanks :thumbup1:

Mine squeals like that when first started, but stops higher in the rev band, then I hear nothing until I start her up again, my pas has also felt heavy on a couple of ocassions while slow manouvering or parking, but it hasn't done that for a while now, could it have been lack of or little use by previous owner?

Have you tried bleeding the PS?

no not yet... might give that a go later. Do you think its contributing to the noisy belt?

Had a quick look under the bonnet earlier, the squeal goes away as soon as the viscous fan kicks in - what does this mean?!

no, but it may be part of the PS tightening up problem, plus if the cars been sitting for a while the fluid may have gone a bit nasty.

Don't know why the fan kicking in would stop the belt squealing.

Try a squirt of 'Belt slip' from a decent motor factors. Much like a can of carpet glue spray, it adds sticky film to the surface of the belt to cure this..

As TubZ says, easy fix and nothing to worry about Baz. Partco do some clear grease in a spray can, it's the same with added grip.
