Bonnet pin problem???

Got a set of bonnet pins on the carbon fiber hood on my breaker which im keeping but I cant get the tabs to close, anyone had this happen?? or am i being thick??

 

dont want to push down to hard incase i snap one in the cold

 

any help

    not that I really know much about them ...... but don't most of them have adjustments to make the pin sick up more? and aren't you supposed to turn something (a clip) or push a pin though to secure it?
