Hi guys,

I'm asking this question on behalf of my best friend in Holland who's also got a Zed but isn't on this forum ...

His car (a '91 US spec TT manual 2-seater) is running perfectly fine but he's noticed that the viscous fan comes on quite regularly and very loudly. I know from experience that mine rarely comes on unless I'm bombing down the motorway on a very hot day (and lets face it ... that only happened once since I've owned my Zed wink.gif) He doesn't do very long journeys in the car and doesn't drive it very often (has a company car). The car also doesn't seem to overheat at all. Nothing else seems to be wrong with the car but as he's not very technical he won't do an ECU diagnostic by himself. Next time I'm over I'll have a thorough look over the car.

But, back to the question ... does anyone know of any reason why this fan would come on so frequently? Any advice will be gratefully passed on!

Cheers fellas!

Danny

Danny,

the viscous fan is the one attached to the front of the engine and is turning all the time....

if you mean the electric fan keeps coming on, the one in front of the radiator, then that is directly related to the ECU coolant sensor.

try cleaning the connections first, else replace that and see how he gets on.

it's not an expensive little thing.

Crickey! Yes, I meant the electric fan in front of the rad ... Doh! Will tell him to have a go at cleaning the connectors etc and when I get over there will have a look myself.

Thanks guys!

Danny

Note as well that the leccy fan is 2 speed on a TT and should come on only under certain conditions with low speed high temp and whether aircon is on or off.

Hi Danny,

Is he experiencing a loss of power when it comes on? is there a whooshing sound? if so, his fan clutch is slipping.

Cheers,

Brian
