Guys,

I know the light thing kicks around a bit, here's my sixpennorth.

Just before the Poole meet I changed my dip lamps to 130W. OK, so technically it's illegal, but by God I could see where I was going. Didn't do the main because a:never get to use them and b: they are a serious pain in the arse to do. However, that's bye the bye. Yesterday, one of the new lamps blew on the way home. At least, I hope it was the lamp. So, power to much for the heat dispersion or something. Back to the basics, perhaps JeffTT's mod may be the only way to go.!!!!

Bryane matey the reason your bulb has gone will be due to heat! simply put the wiring is not designed for that high a bulb. given that when the engine running you have 13.5 volts (approx) available and a 130 watt bulb then you are looking at the wattage divided by the voltage 130~13.5 = 9.62 amps which in an ideal world would be about the limit. however as the cables are NOT designed for this load then the available voltage will be reduced as volt drop will occur in the cabling, in some cases I have tested and found only 8 to 9 volts.

Now do the maths and 130~8 = 16.25amps! problem here is the wiring and fuses are now running over their max rating, but worse still the bulb itself is not designed to run at this current and blackening of the bulb and overheating of the meatal base occurs and the failure of the bulb terminal and then its all over.

If you want to run 130 watt bulbs you need to rewire the whole assembly and use heavy duty switching relays etc.I have seen on some Jap imports this already done with a kit from HKS and in all cases the normal 55 watt bulbs are still in place so proving as already said on this topic before the Nissan cabling is at it`s limit with normal bulbs. Its worth doing a volt check at the bulb when on to see how much drop you have, bet it will surprise you.

Jeff, cheers, I thought it was probably heat without all the calcs. Pain though, they really worked!!

I have 85W bulbs for the JAP imports if your interested in trying them. They are £11 each including postage.

Leigh.
