Ok, as some of you may know my engine is still in approx 200 pieces in my garage - while the bottom end gets rebuilt. (For those of you that don't know - its in about 200 peices in my garage biggrin.gif)

In the meantime I've had loads of time to think about the rest of the work that I want to do, but can't decide whether or not it would be beneficial to remove the EGR system.

Now, as far as I'm concerned its 99% there for emissions reasons, and only 1% to keep the temperature down in the detonation zone.

Whilst digging through all the rides section last night i noticed some of you have had this done.

I'm sure that if I remove the EGR system, I won't suffer from pre-detonation, because of the 555 injectors and correct fuel maps in the ECU (along with larger intercoolers, blah blah blah).

In electrical terms - I'd leave the solenoid in place so the computer thinks all is hunky-dory I assume, but just remove the vacuum hose?

Comments anyone if you will?

Cheers peeps wink.gif

Simon.

Simon - I think 300degree in the states make an EGR removal kit, if your engine is out and you want to ditch the EGR - do that..

Basically, you blank off the hole in the pass. manifold with a plug, and you get two plates to block off the EGR holes in the underside of the intake (the ones that are a b1tch to get at with the engine in!), and a plug to cap the vacuum line with..

However their page does say;

"This kit is NOT for on-road use. It is intended to be a clean solution for removing the EGR system on race-built, race-tuned engines."

Although that could well be down to the US's pedantic emissions laws..

It would be good to have a word with Pheung at GR Racing ( http://www.EatRiceZone.com ). He is very knowledgable (has posted on this site) and his company is the outlet for 300Degree. He would be able to give you additional advice on road use.

Fyi, I have bought a few things from Pheung, and spoken to him a couple of times. Very helpful and knowledgable.

My z is EGRless. No probs. It's for emissions only.

My understanding is (correct me anyone) that EGR does not reduce the temp but if anything would actually increase it!! If there is too much unburnt O2 in the exhaust this hits emmission regs. The O2 sensor detects it and opens the EGR to inject exhaust gas into the cylinder so that remaining O2 in the cylinder during subsequent engine cycle will burn up more completely leaving the exhaust with less o2. Why unused O2 in the exhaust is a prob not sure. Soemthing todo with CO2 I s,pose.Anyone study chemistry? Hot exhaust gas going into the cylinder heats up cylinder. But fuel mixture explosion is less therfore less heat. Maybe it balances out but I do not think it'll reduce cylinder temp.

EGR can be a cause of detonation if valve gets stuck open. Ditch it. Best done when engine out.
