Autometer boost gauge and what's this connector for?

I've just got an autometer boost gauge (thanks Smithy!) but I'm having a bit of trouble fitting it. The gauge doesn't come with vacuum hose, it comes with 1/8" NPT hose and connectors like this - boost.jpg

I found a US web site and a discussion on tt.net that showed a place that the autometer hose will just screw into boostgauge01.jpg

So, I've just been out to connect my gauge to this point and found that I have something connected to it already - connector.jpg

What is it? And why does my jap spec have it but the US specs don't seem to?

Thats your brake booster vacuum hose..

The reason it's not there on US Z's is because their brake servo is on the other side of the car..

Not sure where else you can screw that into - there may be somewhere though.. I'll have a look in a bit..

An answer before I've even managed to get my images sorted out! god.gif biggrin.gif

Presumably the US spec cars have somewhere on the other side of the engine to plug their brake booster vacuum hose then? If there's a similar connector on the other side, I can't see it.

Yup - they do.. it's there on our cars too, but already has something in it (the line that goes to the fuel pressure regulator solenoid - underneath the front of the balance tube on the passenger side)..

There's also the same kind of fitting that goes to the recirc valves on the passenger side - you might be able to get a NPT T-piece of the correct thread etc from somewhere.. I'd suggest Norgren, but they only do BSP mainly.. try it anyway though - http://webstore.norgren.com

So where is the line that goes to the fuel pressure regulator solenoid fitted on a US car then?

Dave you see that blue vacume pipe attached to that white plastic thing, you need to cut that blue pipe and fix a T piece into it,then run that nylon pipe from your boost gauge into the bottom of your T piece.

Thanks Mac. The reason I'm trying to find an alternative method of fixing the gauge is that I don't know where to get a t-piece that will take the 1/8" NPT hose.

Dave, US cars have a sort of "two sided" fitting there, one side goes to the brakes, one to the FPR.

As for fittings - Looking at that pipe it's 1/8" nylon, into a compression fitting, into an adapter..

Have a look on that Norgren site, under fittings, you'll easy find a T piece to go from 1/8NPT to 1/8BSP, then just get two 1/8BSP barbed fittings for 4mm hose, job done..

I can't remember who it was now,a few weeks ago one of the guys on the forum got one from Halfords,I got mine from SE they are just a few pence wink.gif.

Ah yes, or alternatively.. You might be able to use a normal 4mm T piece.. B&Q sell them (look in the pond section)..

Take the nylon out of the compression fitting. Boil a kettle, place the nylon into the kettle for 5 mins, take it out, and force it onto the t-piece..

If you get the right side T-piece (5mm, or 6mm will work well, and 4mm silicone will fit on a 6mm T-piece easily), you wont need any cable ties, because it'll be a very, very tight fit..

Good plan! I bought a 4.7mm t-piece at Halfords yesterday so I'll try that. Thanks biggrin.gif

Dave, got shit loads of 6mm vacuum in, red or blue, use a 6mm tee for the connection at the plenum, run the coloured hose to just where it goes through bulkhead and use a 4mm to 6mm connector and use the existing clear stuff to go up to gauge, or do the lot in coloured

6mm internal or external ? 6mm internal is quite large, not really thought this through, but the larger and longer the hose the slower the boost gauge will be to react. The hose to the standard boost gauge is about 3mm internal and I reckon the hose supplied with my Blitz gauge is about 2mm. It's all about volume really and the ratio between the plenum and the hose. Just a thought ....

The reason I suggested a 5 or 6mm T is because that is larger than the nylon pipe.. large enough so that the pipe is a very tight fit, and will only go on when hot, but small enough so that the stock 4mm vacuum hose system will still fit on..

If you see what I mean?

1/4" hose (assuming that is 1/4" OD) is about 4mm ID don't forget, which is what was supplied with his guage..

If that's 1/4" ID of course, then a 7mm T would be required.. 4mm hose will just about squeeze onto one of those.. Just...

Oops just realised that's 1/8" hose..

4mm T piece should just about fit then..

Just spent ages trying to get my 4.7mm t-piece into the 1/8" NPT pipe. Eventually gave in and went to Homebase and bought some 4mm t-pieces. That didn't work either. mad.gif
