Hi i have had SKY Tv for a few years now, just the standard box and we just moved house, typically the box is now playing up, SKY want around £60 to fix it or replace it and that seems out of order to me. You can pick up standard SKY boxes off ebay for around £20 and I have seen one or two Sky +HD models for for around £35. Has anyone got any advice on what I should do. I did a self install at our new place so would it be worth my while cancelling all together and starting fresh again or just get another used box? I have heard loads are just tat though and it can be a can of worms.

I would welcome some views on this I need to do something soon as I am getting tired of freeview :)

I seen it and love the sky 3d stuff. but still will not go out and get a new telly yet.

yes but you pay to watch the bbc but they will not fix your telly for free

We pay the TV license because its the law, if you own a TV, not cos we want too lol

Dont get too worked up mate, its just a chance to have a dig at Sky:laugh:

Amittedly slightly off the original help topic, but still part of the topic-ish :surrender:

I do actually have a Sky related question.. I have Sky+ HD in my room the parentals have a standard box downstairs. Now if I switch mines off at the plug the box downstairs randomly drops some channels as and when it feels like it :/

The two boxes are not linked so when you turns yours off it should not affect the other

It could be the lnb on the dish playing up.

And never turn off at the plug as you miss updates at night.

can you get to your dish easy and how long has it been there?

Dish has been there a while but the guy said he replaced the bit on the end when he installed my HD just over a year ago. Reason I've been putting it off at the plug is because I do 24 hour shifts away from home so there is no point in it burning electricity when I'm not at home :/

If the HD box is less then a year it is a new type that will turn it self off and use very low power and will turn its self on when a update comes down.

try swapping your box with the other one and see if the channels are still missing.

If they are not missing then the old box is faulty if they are still missing then the lnb is at fault.

Also is there any joins in the cable?

Don't think there is any joins but my Sky+ box has the 2 coax connections and the one downstairs has 1 so didn't think you could swap them around?

I have one of the original HD boxes in the bedroom which I have to unplug at the wall as while it is upgrading the cooling fan kicks in and stays on all night even after the upgrade finnishes, it's like have a 747 in the bedroom next to me! Sometimes the only think that will drown out the noise is the wife snoring like a train one of these days I am going to put a pillow over her face as I am sure that will stop her but then I will still be left with the HD box taking of in the corner! :devil2:

I also have a newer (less that 4 months old) HD box down stairs which is causing me problems although I think it may be the dish or LNB as it gets worse when it rains!

I can send you a LNB if you pay the posting that will be good in the rain.

I bet the one in your bed room is a thomson.

its not a coax..

plug the lead into input one of you hd box and it will work. dont need two just for testing it out.

i been with sky for years now and never had problem with them if box failed but then again i got sky insurance cover so its all free, Jmwuk right you pay for programmes, agin its like most electricals after 12months you are on your own its not right but thats life and a way for companies just to sell you something else nobody cares about fixing.

Had same problem.... told them I was going to cancel after 10 years, was not happy about new customers getting a better deal than me (long term loyal customer)and got put through to customer retentions...told them I would sign a new contract for 12 months if I could have a Sky + box and have it fitted...they did

Yeah, I have a similar story, our box broke, (where the aerial goes in the back) they quoed me £65.00 to fix, I said I would go to cable then, so they changed their minds and gave us a new box.
