Hi i have had SKY Tv for a few years now, just the standard box and we just moved house, typically the box is now playing up, SKY want around £60 to fix it or replace it and that seems out of order to me. You can pick up standard SKY boxes off ebay for around £20 and I have seen one or two Sky +HD models for for around £35. Has anyone got any advice on what I should do. I did a self install at our new place so would it be worth my while cancelling all together and starting fresh again or just get another used box? I have heard loads are just tat though and it can be a can of worms.

I would welcome some views on this I need to do something soon as I am getting tired of freeview :)

Had same problem.... told them I was going to cancel after 10 years, was not happy about new customers getting a better deal than me (long term loyal customer)and got put through to customer retentions...told them I would sign a new contract for 12 months if I could have a Sky + box and have it fitted...they did

I have sky+ hd in one room just over £30.00 a month, no deposit (min ch package) with another sky box downstairs (old digi type) on a sky freeview card its just whats best for you i guess

I threatened to cancel my subscription unless they give me a new box free. They did lol.

I was paying £48 a month, so i guess they werent prepared to lose the £576 a year for the sake of a box, which costs them bugger all.

I too had installed it all myself and my box was playing up. I bought my HD box brand new when it came out, cost about £200, so there was no way i was going to pay for another one.

Just stand your ground, they will not want to lose a valued customer.

I work for sky, what is the box doing? Also if you have just moved ring up sky say you have move they will send someone out for free to install a new dish and cable, then if the box is still playing up they will have to put a new box in at the same time. Hope this helps.

Also I think the £60 is a fair price. I know you pay ex amount a month but that is for the channels on the sky box. If your tv broke you would not phone up the TV Licence people to fix your tv.. The £60 we will fix your sky system and give you 90days warranty. I know I would pay that then buying a box of ebay.

But you pay for the service from Sky and surely if the equipment that they have provided is no longer giving you that service it's up to them to rectify it? Everytime something goes wrong with our Sky it's the same old "£60 for an engineer to be sent out", jog on.

Like i said you pay your TV licence you dont get the bbc to come and fix you tv do you.

You dont get nissan to fix your 300zx when it goes wrong for free.

You dont get the water bored to fix your leaky tap.

you pay sky for the channels not the dish or the box, you get them free or buy them from sky when you become a new customer.

I could go on for hours with this.

If you dont like it go to freeview see how you get on when that goes tits up or even worse Virgin..

I think your missing the issue, i totally understand what you are saying and you have a valid point. My point is, we have to paty to watch the premium channels on sky and therefore if the box goes wrong we cannot watch the programmes we pay for, so in my opinion its in the interest of sky to keep me watching and paying, so surely a free box is the least they can do. Obviously you as an installer? wont get paid, which i think is your issue lol

my old sky box packed up a while ago just got a newer box off ebay rang customer services all they needed was some details off the new box and hey presto back on!

dan.

LOL! I dont think he is missing the issue to be fair! Everyone wants something for nothing & sometimes if you kick up enough you may get it, so worth a try.

However you are paying for the subscription, the sky box is a piece of electrical equipment that has a 12 month warranty as far as I am aware - once out of warranty thats it! If it goes wrong its down to the owner regardless of the subscription!!

How about this: My iphone goes wrong out of apples warranty period - I pay a monthly subscription to O2 for my phone package the same as I pay to sky for my TV package - would you expect O2 to give me a new iphone for free?! Nice thought but its not gonna happen!!

Like i said you pay your TV licence you dont get the bbc to come and fix you tv do you.

I don't pay nissan a monthly fee to drive my car though. My HD box was £200 from sky so I DID pay them for that and not just to watch their channels. I have been a Sky customer for 15 years and have had to pay for every box I've had!

Plus If you have a TV then you have to pay the Licence fee unless you can prove that you cannot view any BBC channels.

I could go on for hours about this..

All I can say if you dont like it go to virgin or freeview. but you will be back lol

been doing my job now for over 10years and must take out over 10 virgin systems a week...

sorry all rant over......

Oh if any one does need some help you can always PM me

Don't get me wrong I do see your point and I couldn't be without Sky HD. I think though that it's in Sky's interest to replace boxes for loyal customers as the price of a new box is far less than what they would lose on subscriptions. Sky freeview is a different matter entirely though and if the box goes wrong then its up to the customer to fix or replace.

Thing is i cost sky quite a bit of money just to swap a box over for you.

A new HD box cost to sky is about £100. let alone all the staff that have to get it to you.

I say sky should charge you and extra £2 a month and then when things go wrong we come out free.

Anyway would should be helping someone out to get the sky fix........

That's not a bad idea there.

Jmwuk, i think you are missing the point entirely, the sky box is a large part of the sky package whether you paid for it or not. comparing using one to driving a Nissan is just plan silly, you can still do everything you want to do if your car is off the road by other means. yet when your sky box packs up, as its part of the sky package and you need it for viewing, then yes they have a obligation to replace the box for free.

If you don't buy a tv licence, it doesn't stop you reciving the channels and as freeview is just that "free to view" then they hold no obligation over replacing the box you got from tesco's.

Sky sell a service and if its not "fit for purpose" then they have to sort it out, its not like you can plug a virgin box in and receive the same channels with your sky viewing card, i pay a total of £70 minus phone call charges for my sky, thats every channel minus the sky sports package, talk unlimited and unlimited broad band. they changed my box once already and gave me a older model that had already been refurbed as the sticker was still on it. it is now playing up where it goes out of phase on the refresh rate making it unwatchable. they will be replacing my box soon free of charge.

As for the iphone comment, if you have a white screen of death, in or out of warranty, apple will replace it for free.

Like i said i could go on for hours but thats it for me this thread was about helping someone fix there sky system.

voadashots you should of got a same model or a newer one the sky man has seen you off. Plus we dont put stickers on them. seams a bit fiffy to me.

Hi I was not wanting to cause an argument sorry I only had a basic sky box though no hd or sky plus so i was just stating thet £60 to fix that seems a bit steep when you can get a standard crappy box for cheap. I just wanted to see what other people would recommend. i understand 12 months and warranty is gone i would not mind too much paying £60 for a fancy new hd box replacement but for one of the old standard ones not really hence my question.

On another point someone mentioned mobile contracts, in my opinion if a provider offers you an 18 month contract or even 24 months in some cases with a phone then I do beleive that they should offer a warranty for that period, my wife had an lg phone that died 13 months into an 18 month contract and the provided did not want to know, that way you do feel a bit short changed. This is not the situation with my sky deal though I have had sky for a few years now, I called up once before and they offered me nothing when I said I was thinking about leaving I currently have all the sport and movie channels plus all the other packs apart from some premium choices.

from what people have said I think its worth trying again with sky to see what they may offer me given all the custom I have given them. i would not mind getting a new box even if I have to stick with them for another 12 months.

also thanks to the person who suggested calling them out having moved. I will let you know how I get on in the end.

hi the picture keeps breaking up then it might just go off so I turn it off leave it for a few minutes then turn it back on, sometimes its ok then other times it says no satellite signal being received and you cant get anything up, I have never had this problem before. I think its just a bit worn out too every now and again I have to re adjust the scart cable as it gets loose easily and lines appear across the tv, its the box connector not the cable. the caple is a quality cable plugged into a 3dtv purchased just 2-3 months ago, tv works just fine. So I came to the conclusion the box is playing up. signal strength when I check it seems ok so cant think what else to do. I think its time I had a more up to date box being able to record things would be great havign two young kids and a busy job. the problem I am having too is annoying when the kids are watching something then it goes off, try to explain to a 2-3 year old why disney just went off he he.

I will give you a tip if you see a sky van. Stop and get the installers number, always after a bot of extra cash.

Oh by the way I dont rate 3DTV on a daily basis, great for films, not workable with a young family. so most of the time dont spend watching in 3D.

I obviously do not have SKY 3d with my standard box but the tv does quite a good job of changing standard signals into 3d the few times I have used 3d. I was impressed by the store display so went for 3d, if you are thinking about going down that road I would personally wait or get a larger screen full hd tv for the comparable price. just my opinion I know others may disagree, depends on your situation though. for me kids and 3d glasses dont mix :)
