Camcorders Help

Does anyone know much about camcorders??

Hoping to find a decent video quality (doesn't have to be HD) camcorder that records to HDD for the sub £200 price range...is that even possible??

Most I've seen are £220 - £350ish but I have no idea when it comes to camcorders so not sure if they're even good or not!

Basically want it for hols/travelling, etc as well as possibly mounting in the zed from time to time though this will certainly be a secondary use.

as hoping to try and do some research so I can try and bag something in the run up to new years

Alan........

I bought a Sanyo Xacti HD2000 last year excellent tiny HD camera. Sample vid here , make sure you select 1080p for best quality.

btw thats a memory card cam but tbh memory cards are alot easier to work with them HD. Also that vid was very low light which is a much better demo. Under good lighting you can expect near broadcast quality as it does 1080p

wotever u do dont get a jvc, they record in some obscure formatt which is impossable to do anything with

Worth mentioning that you do need a monster pc to work with HD video if your going to be editing via a pc. I have a watercooled i7 rig and really does give it a hard time.

not planning on doing any editing as such so hopefully shouldn't be a problem. Cheers for the tip though!

How much video can you record on a memory card though? I read somewhere that even with 8gb, you're only looking at about an hour max?? hence why I wanted to go for the HDD cams...

Off top of my head not exactly sure, I have a couple of 16gb cards and I would guess about what you said so couple of hours per card. Its so simple to transfer that its not a problem, it takes seconds just to grab the card and pop it into my PC to transfer new recordings over and then Im just storing everything on the PC rather then on the camera. I had a HD camera before and then it was a pain because you need to find/hook up the leads, make sure theres juice in the camera.. that sort of thing. Also a memory card works on any PC, its just real easy.

Also I always consider hard drives as rather fragile, cameras are going to get dropped, knocked about.. that sort of thing. These days a camera is not worth reparing if it gets a fault. Just seems like one less thing to worry about.

hmm...I guess. I think I just figured that with the SD card cams, I'd be paying the price differential out in several SD cards.

Cheers for all the advice guys. Decided to take the plunge and spend a bit more than I'd planned but opted for the SD card HD variety and went for this little number...

Charging it at the moment but can't wait to take it for a 'spin'!

On loads of Sony products if you buy before new years you can fill in a form and Sony pay the VAT back to you. So about £45 for you!

Thats if your camera qualifies. But well worth a look.
