INTERCOOLERS?

Somebody posted an article some time ago about getting FORGE to make up some big ICs.

well i have been in contact with them and they have made some up for a guy who is running a 600HP a race Z.

This guy had to modify his car to get them in but Forge say that they will be obtaining some standard Z ICs on tuesday that they can measure and use to modify the spec for standard fitting.

My cash is waiting--if anybody else is interested then let me know so i can put in an order and we should be able to get a good price on each unit.

Great - the only thing I would say is that you can actually get larger ICs in the standard holes - the HKS jobbies are bigger - maybe have the same pipe inlets/outlets but with a bigger core - 300z has the HKS ones - measurements warren???

Hi Guys,

I spoke to Forge at the Autosport show, and they said the same, if I send in the sizes they will make them up for us.

I dont however have any sizes for the HKS, BLITZ, STILLEN or any other aftermarket setup to send them.

I was also thinking about charge coolers like the Lotus Esprit has, wondering if these might be more efficient???

Charge vs. intercooling used to be debated ad. infinitum on the GTTOC site, and we never did come up with which was best smile.gif

BB Tunings big power (290bhp) Ren 5 had a chargecooler setup, while the fastest 1/4mile Ren 5 was running a huge FMIC..

The biggest problem I can see on the Z is where all the plumbing would go! It's a bit tight down there really.. I guess you could have two small water radiators in the existing IC area, with water chargecoolers behind them.. It'd require a pump/header system too of course.. Hmmm..

this debate has come up here in the past too, and i always thought that maybe if you ran aircon gas in the charge cooler, instead of water/whatever mix......

but the idea was always shot down

never understood why, i always thought it was a good one....

I wouldn't have thought that Freon actually had very good thermal conductivity properties?

The reason the A/c gets cold is the rapid expansion of the high pressure freon from the high pressure side to the low pressure side of the system through the expansion valve (AFAIK)..

There are liquids with better thermal properties than water, though..

Mercury is one .. er.. not sure I'd want that in a chargecooler though smile.gif

Az (now with new, improved loom)

Do you mean use a vapor phase system like a fridge-freezer or aircon system has, to cool down the charge?

I think it's an excellent idea - but it would probably require a great deal of work getting it all fitted in there.

One possible way of doing it would be to fit the fridge system in a location away from the engine bay, and then pump a water/glycerol solution to the charge coolers.

Would be cool (heh) to see something like this in action!

Guys: On the subject of chargecoolers, i have also looked into this option but have heard mixed reports as to how performance compares with good ICs. I know that Pace can supply/fit them.

I'm likely to hear back from Forge on monday or tuesday with regards to my request. I'll let you know the result.
