Funny - I just bought one yesterday...

Ended up going to Richer sounds after a bit of research, and bought an LG42LF7700:

Freesat HD

Freeview

100htz refresh rate

Fully HD

PC compatable

USB ports

3 x HDMI ports

etc, etc

£499 + i got the 5 yr warrenty @10%

I checked a few places and Richer sounds were the best for value, I looked at Plasma vs LCD vs LED and LCD was best for my requirements.

(Currys did a nice panasonic which Richer sounds did for about £75 less - and the warrenty with currys was more than twice the price.)

Make sure you have a high refresh rate: 100htz or more (plasma will be nearly 10 x higher - but needs to be - the higher the refresh rate the less pixilation and juddering when things move fast on screen etc)

Plasma screens cost more to run, and can burn out quicker (dead pixels etc)

LED screens are a touch more expensive, but the screen will be thinner, it is newer technology, but not a huge ammount of difference between LCD and LED.

I would make sure you have freeviw HD or Freesat HD inbuilt.

Make sure that you TV will be far enough away from where you will be watching it from of the picture quality will seem worse than it actually is.

Here are a couple:

Check out thier website dude, i would reccomend, I have been buying sound systems from them for years, and have always had good experiences. (14 day trial period on all purchases anyway, so if your not happy with it you can take it back!)

my mate has this,,,its 579.00 and 46 inches,,but its worth the extra..

That does look nice, and at a decent price too, i notice that it does not have a PC input - so i don't think that you would not be able to connect your PC or Mac to it. Not essential, but i like to watch all my catch up TV etc on the big screen.

Likewise porn on a screen that big..... all you have to do is leave a tin of open tuna on the radiator and it's like your there!

Unless your pc/laptop has an hdmi slot...i sometimes connect my laptop to my tv via hdmi.

Correctamundo!

Like i said it does look like a nice piece of kit, and at a good price - personally I didn't want to go down the plasma route, as they are not as reliable if they gey heavy use, and they cost more to run. - BUT at 46" that is a pretty massive screen for not a lot of dollar!

oooh that looks nice mate.

plasmas are not less reliable. i have a 42inch JVC that is 2001 model and still going strong with no screen burn. and that is a achievement considering its a 1 gen model bought out when plasma screens were a new technology.

screen burn is not as bad nowwa days with the advancement in technology and you would need to be showing the same picture for a good month 24/7 to get screen burn even on the older models.

I swear by plasma technology, the colors are a lot better, the picture quality is a lot better and the contrast is a lot better. all this *****cks of plasmas waring out faster than a LCD is just that. *****cks. screen life of a LCD is 60 thousand working hours. screen life for a plasma is 60 thousand working hours. exactly the same.

If you take a look at Ebay, you see the same pattern, LCD and plasmas suffer the same problems with the boards buggering up, but its hit and miss as to whether you suffer that problem.

Rule of thumb though. below 32" LCD, above 32" plasma.

Yes plasma are a slight bit more to run then a LCD but also screen for screen size price they are a lot cheaper. above 32" the picture quality suffers on a LCD around sharp edges.

But the decision is ultimately up to the buyer.

Sorry pab, didn't mean to come across harsh. just annoying when people slate a plasma screen based on business use when they first came out.

Under normal house hold use, your plasma should last the same length of time as a CRT should. yet if you are planning on advertising things with static images 24/7 then expect some screen burn after about 2 months. (you can also screen burn LCD as well by the way)

But bear in mind. a lot of problems associated with plasmas are due to heat as they run hot, so when buying one make sure you follow these rules.

- Brand name, a good brand name can make the difference between it lasting 6months or 6 years.

- Does it have good ventilation? are there any fans in the back of the unit and are the air vents placed in good locations

- What stand does it come on? it might be nice to wall mount it, but also allow for plenty of air to get behind the unit to allow it too cool adequately

- Does it have a self sleep mode? mine has one, if there is no signal going to it for more than 5 mins, it turns its self off.

- Does it have a screen saver function? this could be ranging from dimming the screen if a static image is displayed for longer than 5mins to funky patterns like a modern day PC.

- location, where are you going to put it? ive seen some horror locations for plasmas and LCDs alike, one of my dads friends thought it would be a good idea to locate the unit above a radiator in his house. needless to say he was replacing the unit with in 9 months due to board failure from over heating.

But then those rules can also be applied to LCDs as well.

Most should be compatible with PC/laptop as long as its got a S-Video in, or better yet. DVI or Sub-d connection. unless your really posh and have a HDMI out on your PC

Agree to all the above. I love my Plasma tele. Just bought a 50" LG to replace a 43" Pioneer that i'd had for 4-5 yrs. The new LG is fantastic and the Pioneer, which is also still fabulous, has gone in the bedroom

Yep, Agree with Vods and Phil, Plasma all day long for me too , better colours, contrast, picture and they warm your house aswell

ah demoted to the beedroom

i remember when me and my bro were just happy to have the tv radio in one in the room

ohh how weve advanced

Yep, me just got a 50" plasma LG TV - very pleased with it. And as above, IMO the picture quality is noticably better than a LCD T.V.

TBH never been impressed by LCD T.V.

This plasma is spot on.:)

I agree with Vodkashots, I too have had a 42" plasma for a number of years now, can't fault it, I have my PC connected through it, it;s awsome, it's LG, no complaints at all.

Just bought one of these to go with GT5 on the PS3. It's not cheap, but my TV is 10 years old. I bought it because I remembered playing a 3D arcade driving game about 20 years ago and that was awesome then, so this should be amazing. I think they won't be around for long at this price, so might be worth a look?

hmm i wonder what you'll be up to for the foreseeable future..

Enjoy your new telly mate.

Plasmas are waayyyy too noisy to live in my house, unless you like the sound of a wasps nest. If you buy a half decent branded LCD or LED they are > Plasma all day long no arguements.

Turn the channel over, we don't all watch nature programs on our plasmas.
