Rear Tyre Wear

My '91ZX has gradually suffered from a reduction in the number of miles I get from the rear tyres, until now its down to only a few thousand miles.

Has anyone suffered anything similar, I have tried different makes of tyres but found only a negligible difference, with last set being Pirellis only giving me 2000 miles.

My driving is mainly motorway and in rush hour traffic, so isn't anything too ridiculous !!

As a starting point - I'd say tracking/camber or rear track control arms. probably the former, since the latter would manifest itself in other ways too..

Get an alignment check done, that'll tell you if the tracking is out (toe in/out etc) or if the camber is out.. If it's the camber, the rear can be adjusted a few degrees by means of an eccentric adjustment bolt..

Springs can sag over time - causing the camber to get progressively worse, or tracking can shift over time due to vibrations/potholes etc..

Run your fingers accross the top of the tyre tread under the wheel arch and feel for feathering. It might feel smooth from outside to inside and sharp edges the other way. Think this indicates toe in.

Yep - Willie you are bang on there - on mine the rear toe-in was set at a staggering 24mm!!!! Factory standard is 0-4mm so the tyre wear was unbelievable to say the least!!! The symptoms you get are the inner edges of the tread blocks feathering due to the tyre being driven partially sideways all the time. Easy enough to check and adjust yourslef to be honest if you have any knowledge about car mechanics... Basically to adjust the toe-in you adjust the length of the HICAS steering arms - remember they must be equal length by the time you finish though wink.gif
