can it be done without stripping the engine?

i aint damaged the crank have i?

also how did it go when i check the oil level?

Big end no doubt, and it's bad, really bad, do not drive it, rev it, or even run it!!!!!!!! Re-build time i'm afraid, or engine transplant. Man, that noise made me cringe!!!

You can do the bottom end without lifting the engine, but means dropping the front subframe to drop the sump, not much fun, to be honest, for not that much more work, best off lifting the engine and there is so much more other things you can do whilst it is out. Hmmmm, crank damage, it's possible, it does sound pretty nasty....

It can be don from underneath I believe but still a biggish job!... Can't tell about crank till u pull it apart!

also how did it go when i check the oil level?

Wear and tear I guess mate, things wear out, and who knows how it has been driven and looked after in the past

ive lost interest in this thing now :( i want to get it sounding ok, do the oil pump, bodywork and flog it of! getting my self a jaguar xjr this cars not worth the work cant fit more then 2 pplz comfortably

woooo, that is definitely big ends, and that is very bad to be able to hear it on start up like that. you have a oval big end bearing and unless you want to throw a connecting rod and put it through the sump / block, i strongly suggest you stop starting it to listen.

Again, What tudor said. drop the front sub frame and take the sump off. you will be better off getting the crank out and having it checked. and as a matter of course it would be easier to replace the pistons for fresh ones and good bearings. or you are more than likely going to end up having to replace them again not long down the road.

Checking the oil is not what causes big end failure. ragging the arse off the car is what almost certainly causes it. a few rare occasions it happens out of the blue on a well maintained car. but more than likely its due to people thrashing it around all the time.

Or taking a corner at speed and throwing the oil away from the pickup and starving the engine of good lubricant.

if you do all that, it'll be worth keeping mate! I do feel your pain tho, they can be a serious downer, sleep on it and weigh up your options matey, if you can do the/some of the work your self, it ain't so bad....

also i am getting a strong smell of fuel from the engine wht is that ?

also i am getting a strong smell of fuel from the engine wht is that ?

I would worry about that once the big ends are sorted out mate in all honesty, your not going to need fuel if them connecting rods fail, you will need a new engine. at least at the moment its salvageable. trust me i should know, ive put two conrods through the engine on my N/A and cracked the block.

The noise you are hearing is the bearing hammering the crank. fuel smell could just be a fuel leak from one of the pipes in the engine bay. but as i said id be more concerned about that midget hammering on your crank.

Its not too bad a job, although it might seem it. just look at it in a measure of time scale, instead of difficulty.

OUCH !! that things banging like the shit house door when the plagues in town.

TERMINAL BIG ENDS

is that your first zed or the second? i remember you saying you had bought another . just thinking if it was the first with the oil issues that its a natural progression .
