Just like lots of people here my TTAuto has what feels like a transmission vibration around 40 -50mph most noticable when very cold such as after a week or two idle. This vib seems to almost go when warm. I've seen people write about centre bearing, gear box mount sag, turning shaft throught quarter turns and others moving to a one piece shaft. Even tension rod bushes have been blamed.

Has anybody got to a true fix without going to a one piece or is this one of those Z problems that you have to learn to live with?

Well...

*If* the problem is your propshaft, then the problem is the centre bearing, which disintegrates, promoting vibration..

The trouble is, that these vibrations often kill the universal joints on the propshaft - meaning that if you replace the centre bearing, the vibration doesn't necessarily totally go away..

If that is the case, then the only solution is to replace the prop (the universal joints are non-serviceable). A Nissan two-piece is around £600 I believe, while a one-piece is £300 - hence everyone goes for one piece, and eliminates two problems with one stone (you can do away with the centre bearing).

If your centre bearing has been replaced, then it's worth trying to replace the rear gearbox mounting first, since this can become damaged from the vibrations too.

As has been mentioned - it could be your rear track control arms, although since you say yours is worse after having sat, then my money is on driveshaft or gearbox mounts.

I'm afraid the only fix is replace & check...

all i can say is a nissan serena van (smaller prop less complicated)is £700 i was told a zx prop is nearer £1000 i had a one piece made and this worked a treat and trust me the vibes in my car measured 9.5 on the ricktor scale

I might have been wrong with £600 - perhaps it was £900.. I know I nearly choked smile.gif

If it's any consolation to anyone.. guess what..

mine does it too smile.gif

i got quoted 650 + vat fitted by a dealer before, so both could be right, depending on who told you...

Mark, where did you get your one piece made ?

Have you got any prices and contact details ?

Okay where do i start,

i have a 91 TT import auto with serious vibration noise at any speed (not rev related).

After much surfing (web) I have removed the propshaft to find the center bearing sitting towards the bottom of the bearing carrier and also found the front (splined) universal joint clicking at the slightest movement.

Now being a canny Scot and pricing a center bearing at £133+ vat i started looking around for other options. Now i have sourced a machine shop that has my propshaft and is currently turning it into a 1 piece for a quoted £170 inc vat (with rebuildable bearings, proper propshaft tube and balanced), now i dont have it back yet, to confirm their work and if the vibration / noise is gone, i am hoping it will be like marka and be smooth, (machine shop man thought the front joint was to blame even though the center bearing was sitting low it was running smooth) but if all is okay i will let you know soon. I hope to have the propshaft back by the weekend .

I'm down in Falkirk. There is also a company near me called "Propshaft Services" and you can guess what they do. I'll wait to hear how you get on. £133+vat sounds excellent compared to what Aaron, Mark and Craig are suggesting. I'll get under and check out my centre bearing at the weekend too.

yea im having the same problem too so please let us know how you get on and we can all place a massorder for props while they have the measurements and bits !

To those interested in a one piece propshaft, the machine shop is using my old propshaft u/j and refitting them with the new bearings and shaft (hope they dont mess up), the £170 is the quote given along as the bearings were of a standard size. the machine shop had the ability to restake (posssibly the wrong word) with new bearings of the same size as long as they were standard. I choose the rebuildable ones as my preferance and they reconded that should not be a problem as long as agian they were a standard size. By standard the machine shop was meaning easily got.

I will phone them tomorrow to see how things are going and let you know.

i had the same problem, after a few miles of driving the vibe went away.i looked at prop ,ok,REMOVED the gearbox rubber and what a piece of crap.the rubber comes unclued from the sides, drops down approx 5mm and that is what causes the vibe.the reason it vibes when cold(or when first driving),is that the rubber is so hard, and the vibe goes straight through it,after a few miles it warms up due to engine and mainly exhaust heat.(ever felt the side of the transmission tunnel from inside the car, well thats how hot it gets).sounds stupid but its true.Answer, buy a new one, bout 50 quid, look at it,see what a crap design it is,and install it.My new one lasted about 3000 miles.Back to square one again.

Matt, that sounds very similar to what mine was doing! My auto has just been rebuilt and the rear seal replaced which was pissing fluid out causing smoking after shutting the engine off!

Mine would vibrate from start up and same symptoms, once warmed up no more vibby. So I will be interested to see what mine is like next week when I pick it up. I agree with the transmission tunnel being hot, our cars are renowned for having crap auto box cooling. SE is my next stop for an uprated cooler.

Strange coz I was looking at the Scoobie SVX tonight on the web and one of the major failings is the autobox goes West due to inadequate cooling! Obviously a design fault and something the manufacturers under quote for when designing! Muppets! biggrin.gif

I guess I am also worried that leaving the vibe too long will result in shagged rear seals on the transmission!

Hi Peeps,

I know this part would be very expensive to get form USA, just because of the shipping, but has anyone tried a Nissan Dealer in Europe, like France. You may find the part is cheaper, and it would be a case of quick hop across the Channel.

Just a thought.
