Ok for those that are computer technically minded i could do with some help please. I got a SATA 1TB internal hard drive this one

https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Hard+Drives/SATA+%28Serial+ATA%29/500GB+to+1TB/1TB+Western+Digital+WD10EARS+Caviar+Green+3.5%22+SATA+II+Hard+Drive+?productId=40315

now i have had some problems installing it. I was running another sata hard drive, an IDE hard drive and a SATA disk drive but my motherboard has 4 SATA ports.

So i olugged the new drive into a free SATA port and plugged in the sata power cable too.

Booted up and couldnt find the new drive so i remembered that i need to use jumper settings to set it as slave so i did this( after searching google i now know sata drives dont use jumper settings)

I then booted and had also removed the sata disk drive and IDE hard drive from the equation. Found out about going into manage devices on the my computer so did this and under storage the new drive was showing as only having 32MB memory.

found out about restoring to full capacity, got a program to do this and then all good. Formatted the new drive using quick format and then copied some files onto it. Then had problems with the drive not being found, finally it worked and i started to take the files off as i thought there was a problem with it. On doing this it would stop and then disappear. Now the drive cannot be found and nothing i do brings it back.

On booting with it connected the computer does seem to take a while to boot as if it sees it and tries to identify it but cant understand it. In BIOS the drive is not showing up either.

Is it now fragged for some reason?

Ideas please thanks for reading

Marty

hmmmmmm, curious..... have you tried it in a different sata plug on the motherbaord? if the drive is good it should show up in bios IIRC...

ok, have you tried disconnecting all but the new drive and booting to bios then?

I have disconnected everything but the new drive and the bootable drive

Sorry matey, sounds like its a goosed drive. my 250gig did the exact same, would be fine one min, next disappears and you have to restart the puter to get it back. turned out to be bad sectors on the disk.

When its working, right click it, go to properties > tools > error checking and do a disk scan. if it locks and vanishes whilst doing that. its more than likely bad sectors, and in the long run you will be facing a losing battle. do you have a receipt for it? if so send it back and get a replacement. if its a used one of the bay. then it is most likely the reason it was sold on.

as for sata, it is plug and play on new boards, you shouldn't be facing these problems. older mother boards where the primary hard drive connection was IDE, sometimes struggle. also what OS are you running? some can be funny about the size of the drive attached to it.

I bought it from the company on the link above which is where i get all my bits from. Im running windows 7 and after trying to copy the files back off the hard drive it would lock and not do anything so i have contacted them and gonna send it back for replacement. Just lucky i havent put loads of files on there yet. Not having much luck with electrics at the moment my blackberry is playing up too and my ipod came up with a scan thing that i have done before in the past and has now wiped all 14000 tracks of it great well thats my 3 bad luck in a row :(

nightmare pal, best off getting a replacement. ive had this happen with 2 of my drives (over 4tb in all) one of which would only work in one socket, but still works fine now. and one which was totally on the dodge, got mine off the gaybay though so was kerfooked for getitng any cash back :-( hope it works out ok for ya

Sounds like its that time of year. stuck a brand spanking new harddrive in my Mrs comp about a month ago and it decided after a power failure to lose the information that mounts the drive as a drive with files on. instead it would show in windows then if you tried to access it, it would ask to be formatted. annoyingly i had just transferred over loads of important files and photos onto it. so had to do a drive scan with my trusty file recovery program (damn six hour wait) just to recover all the files off it before i wiped it again.

Then 3 days later the drive i used to back up all the files onto fried the board on it? its like wtf, is it technology failure week or something? but at least the files are safe, even if i cant access the drive yet. need to find a drive with the same board on it, to swap it over to recover my files again lol
