My Autobox is done!

My god, I'm impressed...a company that says they'll have yer car fixed in two weeks and by christ they've done just that!!! wink.gif

Not collecting it until the New Year though and as usual, getting the bill in specifics e.g. total is a quest in itself!

So to sum up, rear seal has been sorted, and ATF tube replaced! So they say!!!

When I asked what was wrong? Clutches burnt out and torque convertor had gone West also...thoughts and opinions???

If I get it back and I still have vibration then I ain't driving it until I get the prop sorted!

As far as I'm concerned now it becomes a weekend plaything! No where near reliable enough to do 500 miles round trip every week unlike the Kirk who's still going strong(ish) LOL biggrin.gif

Hmmm, glad to hear it's fixed but I must be pretty dumb. a) I didn't know that autoboxes had clutches (maybe they mean the bands) b) I didn't know torque convertors could break

Anyway, you can't spend all that dosh on it and not drive it - that's criminal that is !

Oh I don't know! Just what he told me yesterday on the dog & bone! He said it was due to a lack of fluid though, so provided they've sorted that leak I'm not that bothered. Like I said, I didn't think there was anything majorly wrong to be honest. Just no way of checking the fluid so I'll never know.

Yep, auto boxes have multiplate wet clutches and brake bands as well. Usually the 1st to 2nd gear clutches takes the most wear cos its used under hardest acceleration. Eventually slips under load. Not sure what goes wrong in a torque converter tho but I guess the seals can go and turbine vanes can get bent / worn maybe?

Yes Andreas, maybe you should go and read that thread I just put up on the Gen. forum...LOL biggrin.gif

Goto 'Automatic Computer Controlled' and read first sentence young man! wink.gif

Yep, exactly what mine was doing, slipping like a mother off junctions etc.

When I pick the car up I'll get more detail outta them as it's always gonna be useful to know more about the failings of a 300's Auto no doubt! wink.gif

As suspected, my autobox is starting to go tits-up.

Anyone know the best route to get a replacement? "Factory" reconditioned from Nissan? Is it a DIY job (tee hee!)?

Ta.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm pleased to say I've just finish re-building my auto box. Sounds like the same thing - clutches burnt out.

The cause was a badly fitted slip ring leaking pressure from a clutch piston. Don't wanna worry you but that was pretty deep inside the box.

BTW its normal to replace the torque converter cos they get full of debris (from the clutch) and you can't clean them out cos they're sealed.

Also - I now have a complete spare set of brand new planetary gears if anyones interested.
