Lets see if I can........

...explain this one.

I have discovered something on my Z that I think is not quite right so try and follow me.

I'm coming up to a junction at 50 in 3rd or 4th. I decelerate apply the brakes gently then a with a little more pressure whilst changing in to 2nd.

Now this is where the fun begins.

If just before engaging 2nd gear I turn the wheel in either direction so that the car is ever so slightly turning, hence off balance, when 2nd is engaged, I get a very nasty pendulum effect, first in the opposite direction to which I have turned and then it snaps back to the other side.(Very off putting and cause much nagging from the wife)

If this makes any sence to anyone, can you tell me if this is a trait of an ageing Z or do I have to stop turning when I brake? due to them being like that anyway. Is this due to worn bushes? Is it to do with the driver?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Could be flex in worn bushes..check the tension rod bushes..the wheel can move back slightly when breaking if these are worn...

Lets have a stab at this....You are braking while doing about 40 ish? Then while still braking, you change into second while turning.

I take it you are near the limit of grip at the point of the gear change?

Imagine its like going into a corner while braking, then part way round brake some more, cars dont like that too much

The reason the rear is probly braking loose is that you are suddenly using the engine as a brake as well, so the car becomes unbalanced at the rear as it gets lighter as more force is applied to the front of the car making it heavier. Either, check your tyres for too much wear, or change into second BEFORE you change direction then its all loaded up for the corner.
