I was on the way to london on the m40 ro take my friend to look at a new car and my car started to make a strange noise- i was in cruise control at the time and doing 68 mph, there was then a squeeling noise and tyhe car went very heavy so i turned off the cruise control and pulled onto the hard shoulder. i put the car back into drive , but nothing it didnt click into gear like a normal automatic would, so i tried 1,2 and park , still nothing.....

 

AA came and took me home , but more issues as we couldnt roll the car off the flat bed truck it was as if it was sruck in park or the handbrake was on, after the aa man (who was only a recovery driver not a mechanic) got me off the flatbed with a bit of banging down by the wheel ( i couldnt see what exactly as i was in the car) he managed to sort of pull the flat bed from under me and i was stuck on the road.

 

i then had to get it onto my drive which was a tad behind my car, so i put the car inro drive and reved a little, it slowly moved forwards. i got to the bottom of my road and turned it around without using any revers, as revers doesnt work at all, i got it back up to my house and safley on the driveway. i have now realised i can not get it off the drive as it wont reverse, but does anyone know what the problem could be???? there was no bangs or smoke or nothing it didnt sound bad but there is obviously an issue, the aa man reckons it could be the diff?? im no mechanic but i need help really bad , as i need my car for xmas to viit family :D anyone ???

Sounds like the gearbox has let go and locked up.

even better, ok ill start saving now then ready for the worst, any ideas how much a second hand auto box is ?? i want auto not manual conersion, just before the suggestions start coming :D

Anywhere from free to to a couple hundred quid as there so many available, usually.

Just make you any second hand one can be heard and used on a zed and then serviced before fitting.

To be honest you should have a chat with Jeff - he is most knowledgeable and as helpfull a garage owner as i have ever come accross.

 

If he can help you out - i'm sure he will, and you are not to far away to be honest. He probebly has a box or 2 kicking around as well so maybe 2 birds with one stone and all that?

auto box is dead mate my NA auto did the same and locked up had to put skid pads under the rear wheels and pull it off the flatbed as boxe had no reverse, luckly though just had a little bit of forward motion to get onto my drive got it up in the air removed the box changed for tt parts and box, then drove that for a while and same happened again to the tt box but only had 3rd gear drove back from northampton in 3rd all the way, only way you will move the car backwards is to jack the rear diff up with a trolley jack and pull or jack the rear up and remove the propshaft

Im putting autobox 3 in soon with uprated oil cooler as the one built into the rad is not working i think. oilway is clear but thinking water cooling ways have been blocked stopping the water helping to cool the gearbox oil

Both boxes are dead na siezed solid cant strip it at all and TT one welded the plantery gears together

I am doing a manual conversion this weekend and my auto box is working fine and i will be selling it... Coventry is probably too far for you to travel to test my gearbox while its still in the car but the offer is there (im in doncaster).

I have a fully working TT auto box coming out of a car soonish.. Can be tried in car at the moment.

 

Car will move easier if you remove the prop. Its gotta come off anyway to change the box.

For a recon on your gearbox though, you are probably talking upwards of a grand. that's how much it cost to get my Trans Am gearbox reconditioned.

ok guys i have been saving for a week now and next week i am intending on giving jeff a call to see if he can book me in to get the zed looked at and if poss a tow there.

 

however something strange happened yesterday night just before work, my landlady who i live with said to me i need to move my car forward down the drive a little as the rest of the driveway is getting re paved. i went out to the car started her up put it into drive and reved it till it slowly rolled forward to where i needed it. however i had driven onto a peice of old carpet that hadnt been put into the bin so i thought ill try the same trick but in reverse, nothing dead gearbox still, i put it in drive and reved and the car shot forward like it is working normally, so i put it back into reverse, when i put it in reverse the gear actually clicks as u get a slight slight jolt from the car i pressed the accelerator and it reversed like normal. i did it a few times just to check it and it was working again. the only issue it has is when i put it back into park it sounds as if the (whatever spins is called) it sounds like its spinning as i can hear a whirring/little vibration noise coming from the rear under the car, as if its still in Drive but not connected if you catch my drift ??? please can someone shed a little light or does this still mean the gearbox is completly gone and i need another putting in ??????
