Hi matey welcome to the forum ,from what i know, if you can only select certain gears and it wont go into any others, its new box time, but don't quote me on that. does the gear box make any strange noises? the belt squeal could possibly be a lose aux belt, usually the one that goes to the alternator and power steering pump, which is easy to tighten. but you may as well replace the belts, do you know when they were changed last?

Give JeffTT a ring at Zedworld mate in tamsworth 01827 311190 , if it is your box i have one on my breaker for sale.

Give it a oil change and clean out the oil strainer in the sump of the box, its an easy job and will not cost much. Worth a try 1st. before you buy a new autobox.

Having had a some gearbox problems myself recently, I would suggest that you follow this advice - drain it - take off sump, clean out strainer and re-fill. You may have to do this a couple of times, but no real cost (transmission fluid @ about £15-20 for 5 litres) just a bit of time and effort and quite likely a dirty drive.

Mine started working again, and i got a good few miles out of here till the box started making all manner of noises again, so a new box for me now.

Unfortunately if your box is starting to give you grief then it is probably on the way out, bear in mind they can be 20 years old and might not have had any attention until now, but a quick fix might help and who knows how long it will last? Definately worth a try before you go down the box swap route.

Would depend on who does it, usually around 3 to 4 hours mark if you have someone who knows what there doing, could be quicker if no bolts brake or snap due to age.

If your going to try the flushing, best do it before you bring it up. Reason i say, is because if it does cure your problem, you might not know how long for, like pablito. it will also need to be done twice due to oil being kept in the torque converter.

Did you have a word with JeffTT see what he says about it, might be worth a phone call tomorrow just to make sure its not a replacement gear box you need.

I wanted £200 for the box and ill fit it for you as well, its off a UK car, its done around 99.7k miles, but loads of service receipts to go with it. so has been looked after in that respect. shame in others it got let down lol. I'm thinking its mostly motor way miles due to the fact the car has only done 1400miles since 2001 when it had a cam belt change. gear box is fine though, changes when it should, no adverse noises, no hesitation or anything. plus we will give it some new oil when we change it.
