I got new pipes, ~£200 from Johnny at GPS. It would be a shame to trash your cats, should they need to be refitted for an MOT ... wink.gif

Also, you can get pipes with mini silencers in place of the cats and the pipes are stainless steel.

how difficult would it be to make up decat pipes? Im pretty sure they have the equipment to do it at the garage.

As my car is pre aug 92 I think it is ok to gut my original cats..is this true?

What performance increase should I expect?

IMHO you're better off getting straight pipes. If you gut the cats, you'll have a nice big expansion box in the middle of the exhaust, where the exhaust gasses will expand (and slow down) and then have to fight to contract again to get out of the other end..

IMHO get a pair of SS front pipes from Johnny and keep your cats wink.gif.

I have said is once and I'll say it again.

If your car is pre 1992 red K I think, if the original spec of the car had CATs these can be legaly be removed. If the car is 1992 or after, the CATs my remain on the car

The Ministry of Transport state that modifications to emissions control on ANY vehicle is illegal and should therefore fail an MoT. However, it is very common for MoT examiners to not know this / ignore it when testing cars prior to the date cat's became obligatory.

Craig did a lot of research into this in the early days of the forum - it might be worth a search as I believe he posted a link to the relevant bit of legislation.

Hi,

I removed the cats on my 1990 NA , and it passed the MOT without any problems.

You could always keep the old pipes and refit them if necessary- just to get thru the mot should you have any trouble (unlikely)!

I agree with Hairsy for UK cars, but the situation for imports is more open to interpretation. The MOT guidelines state that if the car is not explicitly listed in their list of models then a non-cat test applies. As an import is a 'different' model then the cats should not be tested. I checked my last 3 MOT's, which were done by a Nissan dealer, and in each case the non-cat test was used (which of couse it passed with flying colours because it had cats).

However, that doesn't make it legal to remove the cats, it just means that it passes the test ....

Cheers for info..the forum triumphs again....bye bye cats..hello pipes..after breather kit fit of course..

many thankz
