New member - Autobox niggles

Greetings all,

I've had my Z for about 9 months now (stock 93 TT auto), it's had a couple of problems but nothing thats stopped me loving it....yet!

One thing that's been niggling me though is the lock-up on the autobox, it seems to do it at the wrong speeds and at the wrong times?! It's more annoying than a problem - other than that the car drives great.

Anyone heard of this or is it my imagination?

Cheers,

Jules.

PS. Excellent site, read the tips on cleaning the TB's - worked a treat!

Depends what you mean as 'wrong' compared to what it should be doing! A bit more info is needed!

It often does it around 30-40mph (I thought it should be around 50-60?) and won't release again until I brake or accelerate enough to cause a gear change.

Other times, when easing off the throttle going downhill for example, it cuts in and out, causing the revs to rise and engine braking to occur.

Like I said - it's not a major problem, just 'feels' like something is not right when driving at around 30-40mph.

Jules.

Fair enough - I won't worry about it then!

Thanks.

Jules

Are you sure you're not confusing being in OD 4th with lock-up? I can be in 4th at 40 but not locked up. Seems to need going much quicker or on a really light throttle to get it to lock up the torque converter then lightest touch of throttle drops it back out again.

I often lock out OD to keep that nice responsiveness and engine braking when I'm below 40 or in town. There is a zone where you can get hunting in and out of OD 4th on light throttle at low speed and the handbook even mentions this.

Also on mine I can go downhill light throttle 4th slow right down and get the rev counter fall to tickover as if free wheeling - I only get engine braking if I lockout OD.

Maybe mine aint right!

Willie

Lockup is where the box is driven directly and doesnt have the 'slip' you normally get. More econmical on fuel.

Willie

You mention the revs dropping to tickover when going downhill. Mine does that also, but often the 'box decides its going to lock-up and the revs rise again. The only way to get out of lock-up then is to cause a gear change or switch off OD.

Jules.

ah so its the equivalent of going completely off the clutch on a manual then?

Jules

Got me! Only way I get engine braking when slowing right down is from having the OD 4th locked out. Otherwise I get no engine braking at all - just like clutch out in a manual. Moment I touch the throttle though she down changes to accelerate again.

Willie
