I have HSK adjustable shock absorbers and find them a very hard ride. it has been suggested that i replace these with the originals to soften the ride. The current ones could be adjusted to soften the ride a little but not a lot. Does it make sense to do the swap ? If so what is a decent price range for the originals...........or has anyone got a set that they have knocking about. I will be putting the HSK set up for sale after the change over. I've also been told that the originals are a bit taller, is this true?

The ride with the current ones is great on flat roads and corners/roundabouts are a pleasure. The local back roads are a nightmare for bumps , lumps and potholes and i have to use them frequently. Going a smoother route can add over a mile or two to the journey, which is quite crap when you just want to run to the corner shop.

I also feel like i'm downgrading....going against the current so to speak.

It's fine when i'm by myself as i'm used to the rigid ride but my wife and kids are winging...... I think it would probably be easier to contemplate replacing them, but will never openly admit it. HE! HE!

Anyway, i just thought i'd ask the question an see what you guys think........THIS IS NOT A VOTE TO REPLACE THE KIDS OR NOT i know some of you guys have more or less already done this .......i might even have read somewhere that some one has even had THE SNIP......jammy sod !!! bit extreme though.........i think. :whistling:

Nothing worse than a car that's too stiff. My old XR4x4 was so stiff I had to loose the 17" alloys and stick the standard wheels backs on to save my spine being smashed to bits! Not very good for the car either as it rattles itself to bits.

I have original equipment fitted to my car and its plenty stiff enough to cope with enthusiastic driving, but it does offer a little in the way of comfort. My advice would be to revert back to standard springs/dampers - especially if your local roads are crap. Make sure your tyres have a reasonable profile too, as they will further soften your ride. Hard and flat is fine on a circuit, but frustrating when you want to go for a chilled cruise.

cheers

well first off you should try turning the damping down. damping can have a huge effect on ride comfort. how low is the car btw

Well i have a breaker with the original suspension on it in good condition, but id need yours to replace it as i still need to get the car in and out of the garage. but up to you, if you could make it to mine we could swap the suspension over, but as i said, totally up to you.

i have to put a scissor jack under the car first to lift it to the height that a trolley jack can get under it.

There is a 3 inch clearance between the lowest part of my exhaust system and the road surface

5 inches between the road and the sill without looking under the car, so to speak.

Hope that helps for a quick guide.

This week ,I'm having the tyres replaced with some 45's instead of 40's that i now have in use.

Talk about rattles and squeeks I've had this car since end Feb and i have taken care of five seriously annoying squeeks from rubber on plastic Contact and at least 21 rattles including, just today, the rear washer motor harness has a plug for the tail fin brake light

i had mine removed but the plug was left cable tied to the harness which was knocking on the boot lid trim......only while the boot was closed.....took me ages to locate. The windows we won't even mention as the doors sound like a bag of bolts with the windows wound down partway, they must be fully open or closed , no grey area.

The only time i get a chilled cruise is when i'm by myself. My Z dislikes anyone but me in it ( That's how it feels anyway )

Thanks for the replies:flowers:

Kris, seen this so many times, compromise is the key here, any sports car is a compromise with performance and comfort been just two of the many things to concider.

Personally I would alway suggets standard shocks with slightly lowered progressive springs, this gives good handling with a decent ride height but more over a more reasonable comfort level.

Coil overs are by their nature track based and as we all well know UK roads are not track smooth, in fact a very hard set up on bumpy roads results in wheel hopping and tyre to road contact been lost and hence grip, not good in anyway.

Sure many guys are happy to trade off the comfort against a car that handles like its on rails but I must say I dislike the look of any car bobbing its way down the road, esecially when the headlights are on and they are behind you.

Standard shock ( good ones) and 50mm lowered progressive sprins rock!

Send me an e-mail with your address : christopher.ottey@gmail.com We can then sort out a plan.

We often travel from Kings lynn to Swindon via Northampton so it's no biggie for me to drop by.

Nothing wrong with the OEM setup. The car still handles great. BUT it must be in good condition or it will feel like crap. Many a 300zx will be running round on very tired soggy suspension and people judge them like that!

Fitting brand new/good OEM springs and shocks is not a downgrade! Each to their own and that.

If I were you, I'd swap for OEM shocks and standard springs (or mildly lowered if you must). Its plenty firm enough and low stock.

I have a new OEM setup, well couple of 1000 miles now, but just come back from the Lakes this weekend and the car performed perfectly, the suspension was excellent with just the right blend of handling and comfort.
