getting good life out of TTs

Hey guys it Shrek again, thanks for the info.on the oil filters,i will only use a Nissan oil filter when i change it*.

Another question.

Any tips on how to get the most out of the turbos

i.e.warming up period,stoping the engine & what to do &not to do

Where in Brum are you located? I'm in Erdington.

 

The turbos on our ZX's can be quite temperamental. I've seen originals on cars with well over 130k miles on and still in perfect working order. On the flip side I've also seen completely worn out examples on cars with less than 60k miles on the clock. So, it is very good that you ask how to best treat them.

 

Starting with start-up, the Zeds are in safety boost until the engine temperature reaches operating temperatures. During this period boost is limited to about 7psi which means that the turbos won't be hammered to bits. Once operating temp has been achieved the boost increases to about 9psi on a standard TT without boost mods.

 

During cruise the turbos can take quite a bit of load BUT do not run them at maximum boost for prolonged periods of time.

 

When ending your trip, it is always adviceable to "take it easy" on the boost for the last 2-3 miles to allow the turbos to cool down a bit. This is what I do religiously. Also, when parked up, let the engine run for another minute or so. I know it looks a bit naf sitting in your parked car, engine running but not going anywhere, but trust me, your turbos with thank you for it. Alternatively you can buy a device called a Turbo Timer (i.e., from Blitz or HKS). These devices allow you to take out the key from the ignition, arm your alarm and leave the car while the timer keeps the engine running for a preset period of time to cool the turbos down.

 

As with everything else in life, common sense must prevail. With bits of technology like extremely fast spinning turbo spools it pays to be careful and treat it well.

 

I hope this post hasn't turned into a lecture but I practice what I preach - and so far so good [quickly knocks on wood].

Z's seem to take ages to warm up and an eternity to cool down, take heed. Always warm up to normal running temperature (box as well), usually let the car idle for a few mins to prevent oil being starved to turbos.

 

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY

 

Usual regular maintenence schedule (a must), allways use the best lubes and parts)

yep, all of the above. My turbos went after 63k, but I never had the advice from people like these on a forum. I used to just turn off my key and let the oil bake on my turbos (didn't know any of this before). When they my turbos went in to be exchanges the guy described exactly the way I drove and what mods I had on my car. Listen to the advice above religoulsy!!!!

great bit of info.i'm located in Halesowen, work in the jewellery quater daily.

Shrek - that's not too far away from me at all! I can be found lurking around the city centre every now and again ...

I completely agree with Danny.

 

I'm sure my neighbours think I'm nuts, just sitting in my car in the morning for nearly 5 minutes wasting fuel.

 

Mind you, for the cost of getting a turbo job done nowadays, its worth the extra few minutes here and there.

 

Infact, when I've been particularly excited and have given the car a little toe on the way home from work, I occasionally pop the bonnet open for a few minutes while its ticking over just for that extra breath of fresh air. Might be just a waste of time but it gives the neighbours something to talk about.

 

Infact, my next door neighbour saw me doing this last week and rushed out to ask if I was having problems with the car - She wishes I would so she can gloat.

 

Anyway, I'm digressing a bit now but all I can say is just dont go above 4K revs for the first 10 minuites of driving.

 

 

I used to religiuosly run my car onto my drive then get out with the engine running and drop my bags in and say hello to the missus then pop out and turn it off.

 

One day I got distracted and then at 10pm ish I went to put the milk bottles out and wondered why my car was running still. 4 1/2 hours at tickover!!!!!

 

I'm sure that's a little excessive 60-80 seconds is good enough I reckon.
