Snap.

My 92 n/a jap import did that to me yesterday.

no speedo, heavy steer, power light flashing, and a light on the dash lighting up when i break.

Sorry for just repeating you problem but your not on your own. I've only had my car 2 weeks and loads of funny shit is going on.

Have you found out ehat the problem is yet?

Speed sensor works your dial speedo and powersteering. If this stops working the speedo stops working and the powersteering goes tits up. It also causes some light when you turn on the ingnition to flash 10 times I believe. Think you need a new speed sensor

Check out the reply i had from SRRAE, i think this will answer your qu.

Absolutely agree, same happened to mine. It's definately the speed sensor. They wear and die and they are only £100 or so.

Accessed from underneath, look on the driver side of the gearbox. Fiddly to get too but definately a DIY job.

First post on the forum so here goes.

The problem you have sounds like the exact same as one i had a few months ago ,i was at a loss at first because it was intermitent but found the fault to be the KPH to MPH converter failing . Quick fix (and check) was to return the car to KPH (annoying bleeping sound an all)and wait for a new converter in the post. Other symptoms were power steering failing to safe mode and sometimes eratic rear wheel steering before hicas failing safe

------------------

Cookie, I can see why this give s a similar fault but it's the power light flashing once you turn the ignition on that tells you it's the speed sensor that is faulty.

No doubt about it.

Simon p.

I can confirm that when my speed convertor went west it caused the power light to flash (intermittantly), and running an auto box diag showed a speed sensor fault..

Mmmn Craig, possibly.

An ECU diagnostic should confirm it though?!

You will expecting "14" if knacked.

Simon - here's a weird one.. My (6 wire) speed convertor went bad/was always bad..

My PS would come in and out, and the auto box wouldn't change up at WOT..

However, an ECU diag showed code 55

Auto box diag showed Speed sensor failure

Never got to do a HICAS diag...

Unwired the convertor - still code 55, and Auto box now showed all clear..

*Very* strange.. I suspect the Auto box and PS are more sensitive to the speed sensor than the ECU is..

changed the speed sensor £72 and the speedo, trip still dosent work the steering goes heavy as well.

the consult said speed sens again we canceled it out took it 4 a drive and still nothing, the consult was reading kmph wen the clocks r mph????wen we got back no fault was cumming up, the power still flashes wen u start up hicas works on the consult as well.HELP wats going on????? my Z needs a nurse

You say the Consult was reading KPH and speedo MPH - do you have a speed convertor wired up behind the clocks?

If so, try removing it (didn't someone suggest that already? Sorry if you've already tried it). As I can reiterate, mine went dodgy, causing *all* of your symptoms, however my speed sendor was actually fine (sorry, bar my trip - that still worked.. I *think*)

wats it look like i left the car at work with the dash apart looks a mess in side there??? dont do wires

Errr... small black thing, square, or cube, 4 or 6 wires, spliced into the speedo feed..

Thats about as accurate as I can get without already knowing what make yours is smile.gif

Hi i'm the guy that had the same problem as you.

My car was under some form of warranty so i took it back to the garage.

Fault found and now repaired...

Everybody was telling me it was something to do with the speed sensor - which in a fashion was correct, but it actualy was the kph to mph conversion. apparantly there are some cheaper conversions on the market and not so good. if this conversion dsifunctions in any way then all sorts of wierd shit happens, especially the faults in questions.

To be honest my car car feels like a different car now with a load more umppphh

A dodgy speedo conversion will cause the power lights to flash - TRUST ME. Im on my third convertor and I have gone into this in great detail. Check the wiring diagram in the workshop manual. The sensor goes to the convertor first, then the speedo itself ,then splits to the power steering, hicas, ecu etc. The ECU activates the error but the signal travels through the speedo conversion and then the speedo before it gets to the ecu hense why it can be 1.Speedo sensor 2.Speedo convertor 3.Speedo 4.any wiring in between.

Forgot to mention. If its the 6 wire convertor from a company in Western Super Ware then call me urgently - 07973 720987.

Anders - Interesting, what did this 6 wire conversion look like exactly?

Mine was 6 wire, small square black affair with no base, potted in expoxy with the 6 wires just "sticking out" of the epoxy pot, 4 wires on one (long) side, and two on another (short) side...

Sound familiar?

found the converter and ive never seen such shit in my life.

a lump of shrink rap with 6 wires pokeing out of it but only 4 r scewed in 2 the back of the speedo is dis the right thing???

its ok 2 drive it i guess ive got 2 go from bournemouth 2 milton keynes on the piss 2orow

That's the little git yep... PITA if you ask me!

Sounds like yours is wired up in 4 wire mode (mine was all 6, bad start).. Try removing it to start off with (you have to "un splice" the two wires that break into the speed signal, and remove the two power wires), shouldn't take you long m8 - even if you don't do electronics smile.gif

Oh and yeah it'll be OK to drive, but you will notice your PS goes off (virtually), your HICAS may act funny (which can be unnerving) and then will switch off (hence HICAS lamp being on), and if it's an auto, you might lose the ability to change gear at full throttle... But I drove mine like this for a few weeks until I figured out what it was..

If I can remember back that far I think it was a little silver box.

This is the problem:

All these boxes do is covert the signal in a very crude way - so, the convertor receives 3 pulse signals but only sends 2 hence the 2/3 calculation to get the MPH to KPM. Now the problem, going back to the route the wiring takes as described in my ealier posting is that the the signal from the speedo (after being converted) then goes to the ECU, Hicas, PS, Auto box etc etc - These parts of the car are ALSO only receiving 2/3 of a signal because its not converted back again...with me so far..there would not be a problem is the speed sensor signal went to all these parts of the car directly.

Now, some companies have tried to convert the signal back again (hence more than 4 wires) but have failed because after the "circuit" leaves the speedo it then goes to the PS, HICAS, Autobox etc directly....(the signal splits of into several separate cuircuits) .... so you would need more like 20 wires to convert them all back again.

I have just gone with a simple 4 wire convertor and put up with it. I am waiting for a company that will take the time to produce a comprehensive convertor that converts the signal back again.

Those of you will auto boxes may have noticed a subtle difference in gear change and slightly softer steering. I did. If you are traveling at 90mph the PS, HICAS, ECU, Autobox etc is being told that you are travelling at 60mph(90KPH).

Hope this makes sense.

Andy

put the old jappy clocks in and its sweet as a nut just a bit slow now???

big thanks 2 anders 4 the adviced

I had this very problem. PAS and HICAS light would come after 5 minutes. Loose PAS steering. Not a problem until you want to park. Also speedo worked ufor a while and then would stop working.

Turn ignition off and back on and all OK for 5 min.

Recently had speedo conversion replaced, and all OK now.

Leigh.
