AH3 Clear coat

After extensive research, i have found out that its not lacquer peel happening on my car, it is in fact clear coat that is coming away, the underlying paint is in rather good condition, so i was just wondering if anyone knows where to get the clear coat paint from? as it would be much easier to sort out if it is.

Plus i can do a write up of the process. as its only a small area that needs to be sorted out. 1200grit around the edges that are starting to lift away from the paint surface. then the clear coat should be able to get a good blend while using the under laying color to keep everything matching.

right here goes clear coat is called laquer it's all the same stuff but a few things you need to note you can buy clear coat from halfords or where ever in aersol cans these are however 1k clear coat (or cellulose laquer) this will look great when you apply it but after 12 months and it's been in the sun it will start to craze or have like a white bubbly feel to it so do not use that stuff what you need which is the same as already on the car is 2k laquer which you can buy on ebay look for the type that has a pouch of hardner in the can which you depress a button on the bottom of the can to release it this is the best stuff to use but you must use what you need within 12 hours after that its sets hard as a rock, also using 2k laquer make sure you have sufficient breathing equipment as the fumes are poisonous, the stuff i used also reccomended spraying it in at least 23 degrees outside temperarture, you can use it out side which would mean you would not need to much breathing equipment just dont get downwind from the fumes

Sweet best reply, I've noticed that the clear coat for the Cherry red pearl has very small what looks like glitter, that you don't get with halfords lacquer, its this i need to try and match to give it that pearl look

sounds like a specialist clear coat look on ebay there are several places that do custom paint including pearls/candy colours etc maybe worth contacting one of them to see if they can do what you need

as far as im aware nissan only used clear laquer, but i could be wrong. something that you should also know is that you must not rub down the base coat at all or else it will look different to the area next to it. it is designed to be a matt finish that only goes glossy after clear.

the only real way to repair clear over base is to rub it back and respray ideally feathering the base coat into the next panel then applying the clear over that.

of course i you arnt after a perfect result you may just want to spay some more clear over then rub back and pollish.

ps 2k paints contain cyanide you have been warned- wear at the very least a carbon canister mask, i would only wear an air feed, but its your body not mine.

hope you dont take this as me trying to put you off but i dont want you to be disappointed or even worse dead

2k is nasty stuff I have a good mask but I still hate using it. Might be better off spending a few quid and get someone to do it for you.

First things first before the repaint, need to get my spoiler / front bumper and rear bumper on first. i just wanted to do something that was going to protect the body work, as i don't want rust spots coming up where the lacquer has come away, but would like it to not stand out that its a home repair either.

Ian, i told you it was the lacquer.. go to a Auto Paint suppliers, get the proper 1k lacquer, if you prep the the area properly, apply it properly, it'l look good and it will last, Did the same on my old red MR2, its quite amazing when you actually apply the lacquer (which is all that's missing) and hey presto the panel just becomes new again.
