Help - my new 300zx is doing weird shit

I've only had the 300 for 2 weeks and some strange things are happening. Its a jap 92 n/a import 2+2.

I really hope somebody can point me in the right direction as i love this car but quickly becoming disheartened with these funny goings on.

1. when i break the visual lights on sign on the dash lights up.

2. my power keeps going heavy, this can be rather dangerous.

3. my mph speedo has stop working.

4. The fan comes on as soon as i start her up

I'll try to help.

1) Sorry dont know

2) Do you mean powersteering? If so sounds like you speed sensor is knackered

3) Sounds like you speed sensor is knackered.

The power steering is speed sensitive ie gets harder the faster you get. Becuase your speed sensor is not working, the dail wont work and the powersteering doesnt know how fast you are going so keeps changing heaviness. Apparently another sign if the speed sensor gone is the ignition light flashes when you turn the ignition on.

4) So does mine but turns itself off after a while. About half peoples Zs (300ZX) fans come on, on start and about half dont.

Any ideas on how to change the speed sensor, This would explain why my mph clock isn't working aswell then.

Thanks again your a star

1) if this is the LIGHTS light, then that is a bulb out, or wrong resistance bulbs

2,3) speed sensor most likely, as Stuart says. it is on the gearbox, easy to get to from underneath.

4) ecu coolant temp sensor faulty

Thx Craig,

by changing the speed sensor on the g/box would this then cure my mph clock not working as well as correct my heavy steer problem.

Do you no where i could obtain both these sensors (speed and ecu coolant)

Thx again

The fan coming on could mean that the temp sensor at the front of the engine needs a good clean up. There are 2 sensors at the front of the engine, one black and one yellow. Clean the yellow one up and see how that goes.

The lights warning you get is to do with the resistance of the rear lights - If the company you bought the car from wired the fog light into the rear cluster (quite common) then this is why it happens. There has been a post on here about wiring up the fogs into the cluster without losing the rear lights as well - so getting round this.

Power steering and speedo are deffo Speed sensor related.

If the bulb conversion is the answer there is a simple but naughty way around this. On the back of the drivers side rear light cluster there is a small box attached with a connector on it. If you cut the yellow/red wire by itself this is the signal wire to the bulb wink.gif Make sure you cut the right one though - cut the wrong one and you'll have a bulb out...

Peasy - as in other threads, your speed sensor problems could be related to a duff speed convertor if you have one fitted. Quick way to check is to unwire it back to kph..

Your fan - I just want to check (since you've not had the car long) - which fan? If you mean the big white one - that's always spinning. It's usual for it to spin somewhat faster initially.

If you mean the electric one (actually hidden underneath the centre panel between the headlights) then that's probably the temperature sensor/connection - clean the connection, see what happens, clean the sensor and so on..

Thanks to all my car is now sorted
