Hesitation when cold

I know that a lot has been written about this but I didn't really pay too much attention as it hadn't effected me, up until now that is.

In the mornings, and only in the mornings, my '90 TT has started to hesitate badly, revs dropping from 1750 down to 500 on several occasions, it doesn't last long and quickly clears, there's also a strong smell of fuel that seems to be coming from the fuel filter area.

I'm off to clean out the throttle bodies now, is there anything else I should be looking for or doing?

Thanks, any comments/suggestions appreciated.

Morning Tim!

I have had the same problem over the past 6 months and have found that it is *primarily* due to fuel leakage from one of the fuel hoses.

To see where the leak is coming from put pressure on the system by turning on the ignition (no need to start the engine). Quickly look under the bonnet to see if you can see any fuel leaking from the hoses. I have found that it is usually the really awkward one next to the fuel damper (impossible to get to with a screw driver). Alternatively, tighten all the fuel hose clips and try again.

The reason why the hesitation goes away is as the engine heats up the rubber hoses expand and form a better seal than when cold.

Good luck mate, hope this helps.

Cheers

Danny

PS - nice seeing you again at the RR day!

Tighten ALL fuel hoses (incl the hidden ones)

Replace Fuel filter (may be clogged)

Check your main engine temp sensor

And...if you have a perf chip, some hesitation for the first minutes (during warmup) is kinda the norm

Zee you

Well guyz, thanks for the suggestions.

I replaced a short hose yesterday, the one that attaches to the fuel filter, not that I could see any damage but that was where the smell seemed to be coming from, well, it's still doing it.

Blew through the filter, there was no sign of any restrictions.

It hesitated last night when the engine wasn't that cold, and this morning I can still smell fuel, but I cannot see any sign - Aghh.

Where should I be looking, I've tightened as many jubilee clips as I can see?

I guess its an aside but the tickover is now higher, post throttle body cleaning, w/o A/C on its, 1100 RPM and with A/C its about 1000RPM. Pre cleaning it was 1000/800RPM, do I solve the hesitation first and then reset, if necessary, the tickover?

Your help, as always, is appreciated

Tim

PS: Car seems fine when everything's warmed up.

Take a look at www.z-car.net

Plenty of instructions for throttle body cleaning, tickover adjustment and hesitation problems.

Maybe plenty but not well organised...

Hesitation/idle problems are not easy to pinpoint though.

Tim,

did you check the fuel-rail interconnecting hose?

Check out a picture that I have in the Tech section (Fuel leaks write up).

Try to reset the ECU and if that doesn't help, check the TPS-voltage.

The engine temp sensor connector is a hot tip as well, as Henri says.

Clean it and check the resistance.

Check out the air regulator, it can be stuck open and clogged.

Be sure to check for vacuum leaks as well.

Look under the throttle bodies for a small hose, which often comes loose.

If nothing helps then clean the IAA-unit.

Hope this helps you a bit.
