My mate bought a Land Rover Discovery today, its got a lift kit on, big nobbly tyres etc and its got plenty of off road ability and experience. Its pretty cool but I prefer the looks of the Range Rovers, Grand Cherokees, Pajero/Shoguns. Far nicer inside for a start. Can anyone advise on whether these other models will match the off road performance of the Landy or am I best off getting a Disco myself?

Mate there is a reason why over 75% of all discos ever made are still on the road today! Nuff said!

How serious off road ya going ?

If its for looks and a wee bit of field work, then Pajeros are good.

If its for working, Disco`s or Landys.

Dont forget about the much underated Nissan Patrol.

Of course, if you want to be a pioneer, try this !!

That video is awesome!!

As a bit of a beginner, it'll just be some basic off road days, green lane smashing and general messing about. I like the appearance of rough and ready when it comes to off roaders, so lift kit and bigger wheel/tyre combo will be a good start, it'll get bent no doubt so nothing too pretty lol.

i've got loads of jeep spares in the garage so that is kind of swaying me a little, but its not the end of the world.

i got a 1 litre suzuki sj. its not as underpowered as you may think though, infact i had to pull my mate in his disco out of a ditch last month!

its not road legal and is off road only, im selling it for 300 quid if your after a starter off roader :whistling:

the best comtarble all rounder 4x4 i found was a izuzu trooper SWB manual, however dont touch the 3.0 litre, there crap.

ive had 4 shoguns (1uk and 3 import pajero), i found them better for towing than offroading, but there not bad by any means,

ive had 2 discos, didnt really like them that much, there slow and always rotten as hell, however there pretty good offroad. never buy a p38 range rover, crap off road, worse on road! always break. hated it.

Are you sure you dont mean Defenders ?

The best offroader is the defender by far, swb, not much over hang to allowed getting on and off banks easy, i used to go offroading in mine and you can virtually go anywhere with mud terrain tyres on.

Disco's are good off road

As said the Patrol is a good vehicle to, cheraokee is rubbish.

Shogans are pretty good really as an allround vehicle, and being japanese they are reliable.

cheers mate, yeah that disco is very similar to what my mates just bought. I know the SJ's are quite able, I need one that is road legal though as I have no trailer or fields at the back of my house!

Ye SJ's are good as they are light and can skip over places where heavy landy's would get stuck.

cant go wrong with a disco with a 3.9 under it...i have a rangie classic with a 2" lift and a few trick bits myself:thumbup1: out of all the 4x4's ive owned including bronco's and blazer's ive never ever been stuck in a hole i could'nt get out of in a disco or rangie:bow:

Was hoping you'd reply Bri... have you got any pics of yours? I'd really want a Rangie your shape over a disco if they are half decent off road.

Stripped my mates one back today, got rid of the carpets that had been left in there which seems like a silly idea as they just hold water, theres quite a bit of welding required but he can do it himself so its not such an issue. But I want to try and avoid it on mine if I can, I know the discos suffer quite bad with it.

most are on my laptop Baz of it working:cool3: only have these here but what a car for so little money they fetch...this one had a 4.6 block in it when i got it but that had to go and i bought a 3.5 off the floor for £225 and threw that in..much better on the pocket now. forget the 16" rims with a lift as the ride is too hard better going down to a 15" rim and run the tires at 26 psi for a more softer ride plus the mud tires are 40% cheaper too.iff you need any advice on the classic let me know as i know em inside out mate:winkiss:

I would go for either a Range Rover Classic (like Brians) or a P38 Range rover if you intend to use it on the road at all. The RR feels like an excutive saloon whereas the others feel like really old Transits on the road.

Had a friend with Classic RR - Bobtailed, lifted, undergaurded, fuelcell, stripped shell, harnesses..etc and the V8 taken from the TVR - it was an animal !

Ok Bri when can I pick it up? :tt2:

I think classic range rover is the one I deep down want to go for.

My mate has a 200sx and a disco, so for me to have a 300zx and a rangie it will keep the rivalry factor :thumbup1: I did quite a lot of off road driving in an '80s range rover V8 in a previous job and it was good fun, but I guess I had nothing to compare it to.

  • 4 weeks later...

bought a old skool shogun last week, went to a purpose built offroad farm today and it was awsome fun,

i got to get better tyres though, it struggled on the wet mud, pretty good on any dry surface,

Blimey, thats an awesome picture. Discos are like collinders with the amount of rust holes so that doesn't help when it comes to keeping water out lol.

Parts are cheap as chips for discos matey, plus he has access to his own welder at his club meets (lucky git) lol

nice wheels + tyres! i found that my little old shogun had the advantage over some of the other lads as they all had discos and izuzu trooper's, which were all LWB 4 door ones, and they kept getting grounded out, however none of them had a lifter kit so that should help quite a bit!

Yeah the bigger vehicles have a greater overhang, once mine is lifted 4.5" and the standard bumpers removed and tubular bumpers placed as high as possible, should be pretty able off road.

Looks like fun mate!

Tell me: when you go through deep puddles does water ALWAYS piss into the footwells? or is it just a rusty discovery thing lol? Will I get through them in my Jeep?

if you look at te second picture, im actually stck there and i had to get a tow out, the trouble was no one had been in there for a few weeks so all the shilt and mud and gunge was sat at the bottom, so my crappy all terrain tyres just didnt get any grip, i was in there for approx 5 mins, there was no water for ages, but the last minute or two it just flooded in, god knows from where, when i eventually got out there was about 3 inches of water in there, the shogun comes with a plastic bung in the footwells so i pulled the carpet up and let it all drain out, gave it a good hoover when i get home too, smells of stale water in there a little now, but its all part of the fun i supose!

i got a good tip though!

when i was driving home i realized the temp guage was a bit higher than what it normally was, thought maybe i might of bashed the rad or something and had a leak, but when i got home a noticed the rad was thick with weed and grass from wading through the water, (and because the rad is hot it almost glues onto it!) so check that during and at the end of you offroading session, last thing you need is a head gasket problem or worse because of stupid weeds!. Also check the alternator belt etc.. every time i went through water i'd loose power steering and alternator, and also the fan is belt driven on mine, i never checked before i left but when i went to adjust it there it was already maxed out, so before i venture out again i think i'll invest in a few belts!

you should get through with yours fine with nobly tyres, mind you, yours are massive?! you may end up floating across it! i only struggled when there was slimey gooey mud on the bottom due to my crappy tyres, and hard surface she drove through like a dream! so along with the belts some tyres are on the shopping list.
