Rear main transmission seal?

Does anyone know if the Auto dipstick tube were loose would this cause fluid loss when driving or stationary?

Smoking problem on my car, at first it appeared to look like it was coming from behind the engine, maybe gearbox area.

However, after looking underneath the car yesterday smoke is coming from the exhaust around the H pipe area and wafting the length of the car and up the firewall.

I have got vibration between certain speeds, car was smoking before SE so don't bother going there! wink.gif

Does it sound feasible that transmission oil is leaking out the rear main seal and is only noticeable when the car is stopped as it's burning up on the hot zorst?

Tim, if there are drops/signs of oil on the housing between the engine and gearbox it's almost certainly the rear main seal.

To be absolutely sure: there's a small hole in this housing (on the bottom), poke in it with a small piece of wood and if there are drops of oil left on the piece of wood it's bad news.

Cheers Eric, you mentioned that it could be this before I think.

I'm confused now though(not difficult) as I thought the rear main seal was at the prop end of the box!

Or is that just called the rear seal? That's where the fluid appears to be coming from, where the prop joins the gearbox. Noticed that when I washed the car the other day there was a film of what looked like oil/tran fluid or whatever covering the rear of the car.

It's booked into a garage for next week anyway but anymore light thrown would be appreciated.

TIA
