hey there ive been driving my na 1990 zx for about a month now and i love it although i cant believe how much fuel its using ? Ive had 2 other v6 engined vehicles before that wasnt as bad as this one, ive had a 194 bhp 3.0 v6 laguna and a 205 bhp 3.2 v6 frontera which i was gettin about 25 mpg . IN the 300zx i put 20 quid fuel in took me from the red to just over a quarter and its got me 91 km ?? which is pretty crap, does my car need a service or are they juust reli bad on fuel ?? and i dont drive it fast most the time im below 3000 rpm ?? thanks dave

not sure about the na but TT suck on fuel lol!!

I can get easy 40mpg in the vec gsi 2.5v6 (210hp) which seems like a mirical lol!!!

You may have a few issues which will affect the poor fuel economy. Dont get me wrong, they can all guzzle, but if running correctly, you more likely to get the best you can out of the tank.

Running rich, may need a service, try and get it on consult. Youre not far from Zedworld, well worth the visit for peace of mind. If its not running right, he can sort it for you, or at least give you an better idea of whats going on.

do a diagnostic and check for code 55 is normal. you may have a dett sensor issue which would retard the ignition

I stuck 35 quid in my n/a's tank on Weds and drove from Teesside to Alton Towers and back again without needing to fill up. Think I averaged about 40mpg, so I think yours prob needs looking at. Obviously that was almost all motorway driving but even so, pretty good fuel economy in anyone's book

Hope you can resolve you issue

Sounds like you might have some electronic tune issues such as a faulty det sensor circuit, temp sensor connection or even O2 sensors giving corrupted signals, there are other mechanical settings like throttle balance and timing that can cause lowered performance and hence higher fuel consumption.

You would do well to get a diagnostic check and adjustments done, any cost involved wil soon be recouped in fuel saving and increased performance.

Seeing as this thread is fitting, and that mine seems to have lost interest, (sorry for the thread steal), I got 200 miles to the tank previously in my N/A, then I filled up today after 270miles after driving it sooooo nicely during its hesitation issues, im sure I would have normally gotten like 350 if not more!

Anyway, I walked up to my car today, this is about 4 hours after coming home from filling up, and there was just this stench of petrol, my immidiate response was geeze, someones got a costly issue (as i was about 15 meters away from my car at this point) and good old karma kicked in to respond to my sarky comment to unveil that it was mine that stank of petrol,

I have a leak....

I've traced the smell to more around the tank/middle of the car, not near the engine... Are theyre any problems people have hade like this, as in has a connection come loose? or a specific weak point that is prone to breakage?

This feels to me, like an under the car jobby, but I dont have access to a ramp, or much cash to play with... should I leave it? until payday? (the 28th)

I do have the day off tomorrow.. how much do you reckon a trip to Zedworld would set me back, for them to at least locate the problem?

Cheers

What ever it cost it would be worth it plus not safe having a fuel leak near the exhaust

pull out your spare wheel and undo the fuel pump cover 4 screws you can check the pipes to see if any leak at least from there while engine is running and off as there will be pressure in the system, wont show all the fuel lines but at least it will be there checked also under the plate where it bolts to the fuel tank is a large rubber O ring is possible this has split or been poorly fitted

Hi Sky,

Most common cause of fuel leaks towards the rear of the car is the fuel tank itself, the two straps that hold it up trap small bits of grit and over the years slowly errode it to a point that is leaks, if this is the case its fairly obvious if you know where to look, and will need a replecement tank.

So the two straps have a black rubber cover on them and they run down from behind the bumper then under the tank and finally return back up above the diff, if you check out the area`s the straps touch the tank and see if you can feel any wet or damp areas close by.

There is one other place and that`s the fuel tank filler pipe, this is viewable at the rear wheel arch on the passenger side, this pipe can corrode quite alarmingly and become porous as a result, and where this pipe is fixed into the side of the tank there is a rubber seal, so worth a check of that too.

Hi thanks for the comments, im well aware that driving with it stinking of fuel is a little dangerous, it will get sorted asap!

Jeff, the latter of the two issues make more sense to me, mainly because i only really notice it when ive just filled up, so maybe this o-ring / filler nozzle is not maintaining the seal required and when the fuel is higher in the tank it leaks, because thinking about before i filled up, i smelt nothing

Seem more likely to you? Or is it just me?

Thanks very much

Yes agree with you, from your explaination that with raised full level it smells/ leaks worse.

Get the near side rear wheel off and have a look at teh filler tube and where it enters the tank.

40mpg? That sounds amazing.

My NA does 16 in town and around 28 on the motorway, which is as expected I believe. 40 doesn't sound quite right but then you never know!
