How long this thread will last who knows, someone get the stopwatch out

First off I would like to say this is not aimed at anyone, it is not a slanging match and would like it kept to just sensible comments and replies without it degrading into a mod slanging battle as that is far from what this thread is about.

I'd like to know why we are not allowed to mention or express opinions about banned members?

And I don’t mean making comment on if you feel their ban was right or wrong, just saying its a shame they are not here etc or even asking another member why they are no longer about, your jumped on by mods and told that kind of talk will get you into trouble.

Now the people being banned is the committee decision and final and that’s how it is, we accept that and respect their decision, completely fare enough.

But why on earth is the mere mention of any banned member’s name being treated as a hanging offence?

Now we have all seen the threads being dug up recently from "the good old days" and it can’t help to make you wonder if we are being a little too moderated these days purely because they "can" moderate a thread not because it needs it.

70% of the time if a (questionable) thread if left to run its course without comments or warnings from mods they end nicely and with no need for butting in, yet recently mods are jumping in with "Any more or this that or the other and your all in the sin bin" making a thread escalate where as if they said nothing it would have gone on quite happily for another page or two and then ended on its own without bad feeling being unduly caused.

Moderation is a very difficult subjective job, but is of course completely necessary, needed and even welcome.

I take my hat off to those who do it as it not easy. But I really do think its time for a sit down and rethink on what really denotes a thread in need of moderation or not.

I say this with the good of the club and it's existing and future member in mind not as a random rant.

I hope I’ve not pissed off too many people by posting it, and that it stays open and is taken in the meaning of it being written and without reading between the lines as there is nothing to read there.

i feel i do a good job, but a lot of people that have been moderated would think i havent

I think your a good mod and would vote for you, I would ask you have your lead put on a little tighter sometimes though ;) lol

Okay, but why cant the original thread be laid on for all to see so they can draw their own conclusion, plus any other evidence/happenings etc. I'm not just talking about Simon, any "event" like this. (For example the bust up which caused the "other" site) I dont think that the small post is really representaive as to the ins and outs of it. As ever I realise there are two sides for a story. But a statement prepared after isnt exactly showing the whole event.

I do find it a bit strange that this being a subscription website that people can be banned by a select few moderators, who arnt selected by the subscription payers.

As most of you know I am a new mod and a thread was posted asking for new moderators I threw my hat in along with other subscribed members and a few of us was selected. How many people here put there name forward?

should open up another thread and put it to the vote.

See whatever the out come is then the mods can forward it to the commitee and let them decide???

the comittee decide who becomes mods and who stays a mod

  • Author
yeah but they would be in a position for a year before they are ousted

Yeah but thats what the comitee is there for surely? If someone is clearly not doing their job they tell them. If it stays the same they lose the job. Same as any mod position I'd think?

been there done that

i am the first to admit that sometimes a get ahead of myself, but my good doing far outweighs my wrong doing or so i believe lol

I'm too contravercial to be accepted as a mod, that and i'm not subbed lol

the comittee decide who becomes mods and who stays a mod

Yeah but at least they would be able to see the members views and they obviously want whats best for the members and the site.

It dosnt bother me who is or isnt a mod because i like everyone :batman:

Just thought it was a good idea :)

Being a Moderator on a couple of other forums for around 5 years now, i know how hard the job can be. Sometimes the best thing is to let things run their course, sometimes best to step in.

Like has been said before, you can always leave a thread if you don't like what you read. However, if a thread is going to cause upset or offence to the masses (like inciting racial hatred or anti homosexuality etc) then it should be locked and removed ASAP.

As far as the other threads go, it is after all, a discussion forum so everyone should be allowed to voice their opinion. If people have nothing better to do than sit at their computer slagging each other off then let them get on with it. Other members don't have to view the thread or get involved (by voicing opinions) if they don't want too.

If it then goes too far (threats of physical violence etc.) The thread should be locked.

The only thing about modeation i disagree about is "doctoring" threads and removing posts. Everyone's view is as important as the next mans and even if the thread is locked, i feel these posts should remain.

Removing actual posts just tends to cause more upset and trouble, especially since the person writing the post has put thought, time and effort into doing so.

If you don't like what someone has wrote, then turn away from the thread and don't look at it. There is absolutely no point in complaining to mods. This is a country of free speech. If you choose too, step in and defend your own beliefs in a thread. if you don't want to do that, turn away. End of story.

Just my two cents worth :)

hes checking it once, checking it twice, he's going to find out whos naughty or nice

Moderating isn't an easy job and trying to decide what stays and what goes is a fine line. 'One mans perfume is anothers mans poision' you can never please everyone. I have spent the last 10 years refereeing ice hockey which I guess is very similar, alot is down to the interpretation of 'set' rules but the problem is people see things very differently. At the end of the day you have to do your best and accept that your bound to upset someone. In terms of the forum there are easy ones such as threatening and abusive posts but judging what is 'anticlub' is very opinionated and not everyone will agree.

I think the abusive and threatening posts should be deleted and maybe anticlub ones moderated and the member pm'd with a reason.

^^^^^ Agreed

I have just read through all this and like many others I log on less and less these days. I think most people know that I own a largish internet company including a few social networking sites including faces.com profileheaven.co.uk and face-pic.com, a large international portfolio of dating and alternative lifestyle sites, mobile sites etc. All in all my stuff services over 20 Million members worldwide with in excess of 6 Billion page views per year.

Most of our larger sites are run and moderated by volunteer members like this one with support tickets handled by my full time staff in the office. Anyhows I am fully aware of the challanges or looking after or moderating communities on line.

In this sites favour the members are very friendly, and the social side of it adds considerable value to its users.

On the negative side it seems to have far to many chiefs and not enough indians for the size of it. It is overly moderated and the stuff that gets deleted, removed, edited, or the reasons that people get banned for seems very very harsh.

Traffic and users here is on a downward trend http://siteanalytics.compete.com/300zx.co.uk/ maybe because of some of the above reasons???.

I tell all my guys that moderation should be "In the spirit of the site" not the "letter of the AUP" on our sites.

A few things that would really help this place is a vote on contencious issues as without the users paying there is no site. Also listen to what the members want rather than telling them. You dont want one extreme or another but people want to have fun and be entertained at the end of the day.

Have a steam room, let members discuss what they want how they want? it would do this place the world of good.
