Help....has my box gone?

I just drove back from golf this evening, and car was driving fine. I pulled over to speak to a mate, i put the car in D and when i pulled away she seemed to be revving quite high and not changing gears like normal (i have an auto.)

Then all of a sudden it felt as if she slipped out of gear altogether and no matter how hard i revved no drive or power. (i didn't have to rev hard to work this out.)

Pulled over turned the engine off. Started her again and she wouldn't select reverse, but did select D. so pulled off, a bit further down the road same again, out of gear - no power and revving. Pulled over again. Bonnet open, but not a lot to check - levels seem ok.

Started again drove a bit same again. I repeated this a number of times till i got home (luckily i was just down the road)

Has my box gone? what can i check? any quick fixes? Help me please as i was meant to be taking her to JAE tomorrow!!!

Oh no!!! same happened to mine on top of Bodmin moor 327 miles from home, 12 hours later on the back of the AA truck i arrived home, could be an easy repair, but expect the worst mate.

What did you have to do to get yours repaired mate?

Manual box :sneaky2::2guns:

hmmm, i was thinking that myself, but i got an auto so the missus can drive it when I'm too pi**ed to drive home.

No seriously, the Bodmin moor episode was about 6 years ago in my TT, I bought a second hand box for £300 and had it fitted £150, that lasted for about 2 years then same happend again, bought another auto box for £250 and that lasted 4 years and still going strong, then decided it was time for a manual!!

Just done a diagnostics check - no error code. Where do you fill the autobox from? and how do you drain it?

cheers

Filler is on the opposite side of the oil dipstick in the same position, slightly lower down, drain from under the box itself (i think) better wait for some better advise from more tech person though :thumbup1: good luck!!

Fill it from the left side rear as you look at the engine from the dipstick tube, the gearbox should have a sump plug to drain the oil from. you could try and take the sump off and clean the oil strainer.

How hard to drain from the sump plug Paul? Do i need to get her on a ramp to do this?

Cheers

A ramp would be best but you can reach it if raised on axle stands, you will only get about 4ltrs of oil out of the sump as the rest will be in the toque converter and the gearbox chest and pipe work.

It shouldn't be too difficult. However don't expect to drain the oil from the torque convertor - that's a different matter!

And whilst the 'box capacity is something like 9 litres according to the hand book, that is only if you do drain the torque convertor as well.

I'd personally have the 'box fluid drained and replaced by an auto box specialist or JeffTT.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Started again drove a bit same again. I repeated this a number of times till i got home (luckily i was just down the road)

Classic fluid pressure drop and hence loss of drive, the fact drive returns after a short break points to the strainer been blocked, when the engine is switched off the fluid returns to the sump and rinses the strainer out and hence drive returns albeit till it blocks up again.

So the next move is to drain the fluid, remove the sump pan, remove the strainer and flush it out. Try and keep some of the material that has blocked the strainer so it can be inspected to see if it metal fragment which is bad and means defo new gearbox. If however it is fiberous strands then it is either clutch or brake band material, this could be just build up that has never been flushed out or it could be the sign of problems. With nothing to loose, when all cleaned out and back together fill back up with fresh fluid.

Chances are drive will be back, how long this will last is less certain, two weeks two months 2 years?? its a good idea to run the car a week or so and drain the fluid and replace again in order to give yourself a fighting change.

However unless your a quick worker I guess taking the Zed to JAE is uncertain.

Thanks Jeff and others I think i am going to have to get a mate to tow me to the garage where he works and get them to drain the box.

Does anybody have any pics or tips or MUST DOs or DON'T DOs that i can pass on to them so they give her the best chance of recovery.

I'm gutted! I was so looking forward to getting her to JAE. :crying:

She flew through the MOT last week now this! Most annoying.

If you can flush the cooler lines out so much the better.

Paul

Good point, any contamination will defeat the draining and refilling.

Thanks guys.....

Another newbie question: how do you flush the cooler lines?

Right - well i managed to get her up, and drained the fluid again, took off the sump and got the strainer out - it was completely clogged. BUt no sign of metal shards or anything, just gunked up

I got some brake cleaner and cleaned it all up. i stuck it all back together and chucked a load of dexron III in there.

I have to say that i was a bit nervous to start her up, but she sounded sweet, and i gingerly put her into gear and......

HAPPY DAYS !!!! :clap::dance::dance::clap:

She ran fine, in all gears.

Now guess what the next thing i had to do was???

Yep you guessed it - fill up with petrol.

I am one happy boy, firstly because she is back on the road, but mostly because i managed to get her sorted myself, with some good advice from here and over the road.

Thank you to those who gave me advice, it was well received, and once again these sites have come to my rescue, so i just want to say a massiveThanks to everyone.

You may need to flush again after a few miles, but well done in the meanwhile.

Yeah ok Ian, and i need to bring those ramps back as well. Probably wont be for a week or two though mate, as i'm pretty busy for the next couple of weeks/weekends.

And, now she's back on the road i need to start saving up for petrol again!
