I was preparing my BMW for sale by cleaning the car and was finishing off the wheels when a Sparrow was walking around me as i kneeled down.

It kept circling me at first and so i went into my house to see if it would fly off. Well it didn't fly off, it kept following me around the garden and everywhere i went.

I was about to get into my car to get something from halfords and it jumped in with me on my lap.

I was very shocked and slightly scared at first but then i noticed it had half of its tail feathers missing and one of its eye closed and looking sore.

I was shocked that it wasn;t scared of me and in fact seemed at peace around me.

I decided to go indoors and get an open bucket and some bread and make my way to the Vets. Followed me out of the car and back in aswell. I do have a cat and wondered if this was the case but it wasn;t bleeding and had no signs of Wounds.

WHenever i went to drive it would try to jump on my knee and so i had to open my hand so that i could life it to the bucket. It always went on my hand when i opened it so again. was shocked.

To be honest by the time i rang RSPCA i had grown fond of it and wanted the best for it.

RSPCA told me to take it to vet as all vets have a OBLIGATION to treat small animals like birds and insects.

Took it to vets and they said they will see how it goes tonight as they want to try and heal its eye and feed it. They said that birds can get stressed and have heart attacks and die but she did notice it wasn;t bothered by humans and so has a much better chance of accepting treatment without getting too stressed.

Here are the pics. Apologise for the gloves as i first thought it would bite me but was harmless enough that i didnt need the gloves. Washed hands properly though and was told i would recieve calls for progress updates

thats what i was worried about and felt liek im abandoning it. but the fact is i dont have the meds to treat it :(

They did say they have administered it into the Vets and so is officially a patient. Seeing as sparrows are rare and this one is more calm im hoping they make an effort.

feel really tearful now and really worried

what a cute little birdy :)

Hope it's ok.

Reminds me of something that happened to me last week but rather than jack your thread, i'll start another lol.

the bread will kill it....mash some worms up and feed it with tweezers by opening its beak and pushing them down its throat

luckily it didn;t want any of the bread ;)

Middle name doolittle by any chance!

It`s a humbling experience when something like this happens isn`t it.

Maybe it sensed your kind demeanour, lets hope it pulls through.

If it passes on, you did more than most.

Nice one Damien, thats such a good thing to do.

there such nice birds with potatoes and carrots either side of em:chef::devil2:

Top job mate....you did all you could do so try not to worry now. What happens will happen but sincerely hope you hear that it's gotten better!

good on ya mate - if there are some people left who can go out of their way for such a little thing then maybe there's hope left in the world! :)

we get plenty of sparrows in our garden but ive never seen a tiger-stripe one like that before.

cheers guys :)

i feel honoured to have met a Sparrow and spend some company with it, it did seem to enjoy being around me and i hope it feels better.

I will call them in the morning to see how it got on.

Firstly, Bless you.

That poor little birdy, spotted you with its one good eye and thought 'my saviour is here' (shortly before you took it somewhere it would be surrounded by inquisitive cats and curious dogs..)

Secondly, I havn't read a thread in ages with so much latent humour. I don't wish to be an arse - but i'm sure he's eyeing up a worm in picture 4:lol:

Not only that, but I had no idea a vet had an obligation to treat small animals (birds, insects etc).. I hit a bee the other day in my van and it looked pretty sick as it smeared up my windscreen - I have a feeling it was beyond help though. Its just the thought of someone actually taking an insect to the vets that amuses me 'please can you help my millipede.. I think its broken its leg..'

But good job you had the forethought to handle it with a pair of gloves. A women near us was knocked to the ground and had her purse stolen by a sparrow not long ago:lol: I've heard their beaks can be as sharp as clothes pegs!

Hysterics aside, it was a very generous act. Please update with progress - its kinda cool to think the little birdy might remember you and occaisionally pop by to say hello. We assume all to quickly that these little creatures have few brains and so on, but there's more and more evidence that shows pretty startling levels of intelligence.

Just to prove I can laugh at myself - I had a job last year that invariably meant digging lots of holes (not just proverbial ones) and I ALWAYS used to rescue worms befor I hacked them with my spade. My colleagues thought I was nuts, but I seem to have developed a respect for all forms of life, however seemingly trivial. But this nuturing instinct doesn't extend to my fellow human beings (or many of them, at least). But thats another rant..

Good job - as Dave said, if there were more people like you, the world would be a better place!

UPDATE:

just rang got a phone call from the Vets and sadly it passed away about an hour ago :(

They said it just gave up....:cry::cry:

I hope it wasn't in too uncomfortable before it let go, and although i may sound silly.... i feel really different today and feel like my eyes have opened a bit. i know alot of people can;t see how a bird can change someone's life but this bird has definitely changed my outlook.

It's like leo-r32gts said... it makes you wonder how much intelligence goes and how easily its passed upon.
