have been going out on my bike over the last week and took it a bit far today only done about 5 miles but my gears have packed in and ive only got two hard gears lol (will repair at the weekend)

anyhoos i can barely walk but i feel great getting a bit more of excercise but one thing i noticed, i felt very concious about not wearing a helmet, never as a kid did i feel the need to wear a bash hat but i really was worried about being hit by a car or falling off my bike and hurting my head, so im off to halfrauds at the weekend to pick one out

does anyone know what to look out for whilst searching for bash hats???

also my mountain bike has really wide tyres and im sure it is making the bike harder to ride on the road, if you stop peddling the bike slows down really quick and im sure it is down to the tyres being so wide or am i just unfit and thinking that its taking more to pedal lol

this is the same as my bike

Wide, heavy tread tyres are for off road matey..... slim smooth tyres are for road use. You will feel the opposite when on road and off road to what tyre you have fitted. (Hard peddaling on road with off road tyres.........No grip off road with on road tyres!!)

As for lids.... for road use, is a must and for a off road use, is a deffo must matey!!!!

ive deffo got off road tyres fitted and i can tell when on the road, the routes im taking have more road than off so am gonna change them

deffo need a lid

I love my bike and ride it every day, I average around 5 miles per day, mainly to work and back, but I ride it on my days off too, I have muscles in my legs that I never knew possible.

This is my bike, not the best, but it serves my purpose.

ive had my bike for a coupe of years, bougt with great intentions and never used it for 2 years lol

i only bought that one cause it was half price lol

Go to a specialist bike shop if there is one near you for advice/trying your skid lid. They won't be much more expensive and it's worth getting expert advice and fitting. With regards to the tyres you could get them anywhere if you know your wheel sizes. Look for a semi-slick in about a 30mm width. Similar to what most hybrids will have. HTH. And keep at it, you'll get noticably fitter in no time and find you'll eat up the miles (not the pies)

im feeling much better already, i wasnt totally unfit as i do a lot of walking with the dog, but i had two weeks off and put a bit of weight on with eating and drinking loads so decided to dust me bike off and realised i really enjoy it, will probably start biking to work, although not just yet as its about 6-7 miles away lol

Wrong time of year to start cycling to work dude! Thing is, even if you pootle along it shouldn't take more than (you decide) minutes, and think of all the extra cold ones you can consume!!!

Think I'll I come up and take you out for a proper bike ride - on road or off road - you decide :punk:

Keep at it tho' - you'll soon be up to doing a decent distance with ease.

Heres a good cheap helmet, got one myself..

Can recommend these tyres too, not completely slick, but very fast

rolling & light.. http://www.shinybikes.com/bikes/michelin-country-dry-2-rigid-mtb-tyre.html

Also, if your staying on the road, pump them up as much as you can.

Definitely, at least until you've got some road-oriented tyres!

Helmet also a great idea, mine have saved me more than I care to remember!
