While being my usual cack handed self I managed to put a brass brush on my grinder through a wire on my fuel pump.

The wire I broke is the float connection (red arrows point to the connections). It looks like its a simple job to solder a new wire in place. However, as its going to be sitting in/near petrol I'm a little bit worried that I might inadvertently create a massive fuel bomb, which would be a bit of a downer

So should I just replace the wire or replace the whole pump?

I would take the hole assembly out and away from the tank and leave the fuel residue to evapourate in the fresh air. Spray the wire terminals with a contact cleaner and solder.

I would not use heat anywhere near the tank or fuel or as youve said Kaboom:hang::nuke::no:

I should have said that the pump has been out of the tank for about a month now as I've been refurbishing it, so all fuel vapours are gone.

Solder it and put heat shrink tubing over it, will be fine.

Do you mean solder the wire back together mate? I hadn't thought of that :sailor:

New wire if you can get to the terminals easily or join the old one and heat shrink.

Repaired it by soldering the wire back together and shrinking some heatshrink over it.

The wire had an external plastic sleeve over the normal rubber coating but luckily I managed to trap that under the heatshrink as well.

Thanks for the help folks.

Id check to see how the heatshrink reacts in petrol before fitting it :)

Good call mate, I will do.

If it does I'll give the wire a few coats of plastidip as I know that that is fuel proof.
