Ah sweet. Need to get a sparky to look at the electrics in my car anyway, could get him to fit the HIDs at same time

I'm busy whacking a load of crap for the car on my credit card at the minute so might just add these to the list instead of waiting.

Sweet, get me some too lol!!

as far as i'm aware they're m.o.t legal. its to do with the projector headlights that makes them legal, if they were to be in a standard headlight then the reflector behind the lamp makes the beam wider and higher which is what blinds people (like when some fool puts them in a saxo or 106 etc) but they should be fine in ours. but as bret says if they want to be arsey about it then just replace with standard bulbs for the m.o.t. i think the 8000k is the bluest you can go though without the sweeny being bothered.

Interesting! However I'm getting Marc telling me that its well dodgy and its not worth taking the risk - but surely everyone on here who's converted to HIDs haven't had that issue! Like you said, swap the bulbs over for the test

i know i guy, a good friend of mine actually who'll be able to m.o.t it for you. he's done all mine for the last couple of years. the place is only in southbank, so i assure you h.i.d's will not make it fail. if it turns out the beam pattern is ****ed and he does need to do it properly, he'll change them over for you. but he told me not to worry about it when i bought mine.

text me the details of the celica (reg colour (photo if possible) engine millage tax, m.o.t etc) and i'll ask about see if i can get rid of it for you.

HID's are perfectly fine for MoT. As long as the beam pattern and alignment is correct then its not an issue.

Plus they make the car a lot safer to drive at night.

Stick to a 6000k max temp range though, otherwise any higher and you reducing light output and they start to look chav. OE Fitment to High end cars (Merc, Bmw...etc) are around 4500k

Cheers, done that

Bret I know this is completly off topic, but i noticed on your profile you've got remote engine start, don't spose you can remember how much that was and who fitted it?

i've got a toad alarm so was thinking of getting that upgraded but if it can't be done and a new alarm needs to be fitted then theres no reason why i shouldn't go cliford.

What he said.......:sorcerer:

I've had the conversion done on both my ZXs and neve had any MOT problems. The projector beam does help - sticking HIDs in a normal headlamp might not be so good....

......I have 4300k lights and they're bright white with no yellow or blue tinge. Perfect!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

As far as I can tell, this is still only the DfT's "view" and I can't find any actual case law which has confirmed / thrown out this "view". Do you want to be the first?

Don't mix up MOT and Construction & Use Regs. MOT will fail "The headlamp does not emit a light which is substantially WHITE or YELLOW in colour" and also beam patterns which don't comply http://www.motuk.co.uk/mcmanual_160.htm

If anyone claims HIDs are "MOT legal" that's just because there is nothing in the MOT which specifically mentions HID and therefore the MOT of itself can't fail just because it's HID. And you're as stupid to believe them as they are to claim it.

Interesting debate on plod and bmw forums (never ever thought I'd type those words.. :) )

It appears the only 100% legal HIDs are those in Type Approved E Marked headlight units and there aren't any of those for the 300ZX. OK, the 99 300ZX did have xenons but I don't know if they were E Marked - I guess not as never imported into EU.

Think the type regs want auto leveling and headlamp washers too. When the glass is dirty the glare is really bad with HIDs for oncoming drivers. Zeds halfway there with headlamp washers! and self levelling is hardly an issue for a sportscar that hardly ever brings back more than 4 bags of compost from B&Q.
