Sounds like tappets to me, but im new to these engines.

Ive had a look on youtube, and i can only fear the worst, its similar to all the engne knocks on there.

Someone please tell me its not.

This is a cold start by the way and it was not doing it yesterday.

Its very hard to diagnose engine noises over the internet, sound clips tend to distort.

But sticking lifters tend to give a light ticking/tapping noise that can be heard from the top end. The VVT springs are also known to give a rattle noise.

Whereas bottom end bearing issues are more of a deeper/hollow knocking sound. Its typical for the noise to be heard in teh 2500rpm region when there is a problem with them.

Ive just checked the oil, thats nice and high on the stick.

I must admit it doesnt sound like its bottom end related, but as you said, it get distorted over the net and becomes hard to tell the difference.

Its coming from behind the timing case.

Ive looked at all the connections, there all green and not tight, i dont think this is the main problem, but i bet it aint helping.

My dad had a little listen and he said he thought it sounded like a belt, or a tensioner. He even suggested that it could be an air flap somewhere. His subaru has a tumble flap to make the intake air more turbulent, does this car have anything like that?

This noise has been coming and going now, makes no difference to the performance as far as i can see, but its worrying me.

My last car did this, it came and went, did no damage, did not change the performance,

Turned out in the end to be crud clogging up the oil pump and it wasnt pumping oil to the top tappets.

Is this likely?

if its sticky lifters its not going to kill the engine imminently, sounds like lifters if its coming and going, big ends tend to go and then get worse, you can get additive to try clean them but I had to remove all mine and strip them down a few were beyond refurb

I dont think its anything serious, but sticky lifters sounds like a likely candidate, also sounds like a hell of a chore to to, whats that, new seals and head gaskets, then all the parts i might need refurbed?

Oh yeah of course. I think i need someone who knows to have a lil listen till i start dismantling. :D Cheers guys
