after returning from my epic 3000 mile trek to spain with relatively no problems i drove the car onto ferry, all ok. When i started car to drive off ferry and into slow moving traffic there was loads of blue smoke out of left side exhaust that had a burnt smell, once car had got on the motorway it seemed ok

break it to me gently please

Another difficult to assess problem, but if you problem is occuring more at low engine speeds, close to tickover and when stuck in traffic I would think a turbo seal is on its way out.

Valve stem problems tend to cause blue smoke on cold startup and also on engine overrun.

Did you notice if the smoke was there immediately when you started it or was it after a couple of minutes when crawling in the traffic to get off the boat etc.

When it was hot and crawling in traffic que

Sounds more turbo related than engine related especially if the smoke clears with in a few minutes of normal driving - as the turbos get hot the tired seals swell up a little with the heat from spinning and stop the oil leaking directly into the hot exhaust.

One common & cheap 1st fix attempt though would be to change the PCVs as these can cause similar issues.

They didnt have it on one of the end ramps that gets parked up to the ceiling at a steep angle did they?. I watched them move a ramp on a ferry and thought that my car would get crushed onto the ceiling. Maybe if it was stored on the ramp at a steep angle some normal trace oil in the exhaust from the turbos could get onto the cat and burned as soon as it was started. So probably not a problem.
