Yes, you still need it.

When the system is up to temp expansion forces the coolant past the cap into the tank. On cooling when it contracts, coolant is sucked back out of the tank. If you remove it you will get coolant spilling out when hot then air drawn in when cooling.

O.K. thanks :D Would i connect it to the spout on the filler neck ? I also have a new oil catch tank, could i use that for the expansion tank ?

My coolant bottle is cracked also and as been like this over six months, I check my rad certainly every month and the level never seems any different, as it happens i threw some water in the expansion bottle today and it just pees straight out onto the floor, what a waste of time and water that was.

It does not seem to be causing me any bother, however as I want everything to work I am now looking for one from a breaker, so anybody?

I have fitted a large core ASI rad and have got rid of the expansion tank. I wanted more airflow to my Godspeed smic. I have had no issues with over-heating or air in the system after 2-3 years now.

What John has stated is exactly how the system should work,i wouldnt bin mine but each too their own.

Do you think i should get an expansion tank back jim?

Just to let you know..... my engine is still roaring like a ferocious lion matey, no problems what-so-ever, love it to the end, cheerz buddy.

The expansion tank also has an overflow. That is why it has a dipstick so you can check the level. If it is overfilled the excess comes out.

Interesting question, can an oil catch can be used as an expansion tank?

Thanks for the offer but i already have one sat on a shelf in the garage, that's what made me think of the idea.

To use an oil catch tank as an expansion tank then you would need to put a dip tube in it so the in/outlet was always in the water
