Slick Pete will be starting on my new car in about two or three weeks. He's going to strip out most of the mechanicals in the slicktop and get the bodywork right up to scratch along with a few other jobs :)

The engine and electronics from the red car will be put into the slicktop by Dan when Pete has done his stuff.

There are going to be a fair few new parts so there will be lots of good stuff up for grabs at very reasonable prices. Pete will be sorting out what's to be had from the slicktop and there will be some stuff from the red one and of course the rolling shell will be looking for a new owner. Not much in the way of details just yet but will be posting a thread in the for sale when we know precisely what's going.

What is certain is that while I won't be stripping the slicktop to the bare bones I won't be keeping aircon and various servos etc to keep the weight right down.

I guess my main performance aim is to exceed 200 mph. I managed 196 mph on my ZX10R after spending a bloody fortune so this is my last chance as getting too bloody old for it lol.

good choice of wheels, the tires look a bit on the skinny side! What size are they?

Car looks good and those seats look fantastic, you should get some proper mounts for the belts though.

I didnt fit the belts:huh:

Im sure Bob will tell you about the tyres. They were a last minute rush and I think some 888s are on the wish/shopping list:thumbup1:

we also need your input (off forum) to assist with one of the little niggles that need fixing.

the tyres are 235/40.18 and 265/35.18. They are PS3's which are 'not' ideal for the track as last time I ripped the carcass off. NB. Not because they're bad tyres it was because there is too much tread for the track :) I couldn't get Toyo triple eights in time but will be getting them for the next trip to the track i hope. They are a bit skinny I guess but the car is mainly road orientated so I'm happy with that.

Seat belts will be fitted to rear roll bar in good time just haven't got round to making that decision just yet.

The car was a real success. As Pete reminded me it was nine months in the making from scratch and this was it's first outing (and the first time I drove it too) so all in all I'm a happy man. In the first morning sessions it was extremely slippy particularly on the new tarmac with red flag about 6 or 7 times. I spun out myself by Woodcote. It wasn't running great but by the end of the morning worked out that changing the wheels had affected the traction control so decided to turn that off and voila started running much better. All morning I'd been getting overtaken by everybody which was irritating to say the least but now we started to get some power down to even things up it started smoking out of the bends. So got black flagged and decided to block one of the breather pipes. Went out again and having decided it was my last session anyway I drove a little bit harder. It was excellent round the bends and we managed to overtake a few cars including GT3 so I was well happy. Got black flagged again though so pulled in. Turned out another breather pipe was hidden away and spitting oil onto the exhaust.

I'm going to use the car on the road for a couple of months and will hit Silverstone again and see if we can nail it next time :) I might even get to use the full throttle shift next time lol.

Thanks to Pete, Gary, and Dan the car looks and drives fantastic. It's exactly what I wanted and perfect IMO.

As a matter of interest kerb weight of the car is 1370 kg which is about 300 kg lighter than the red one :)

A little update on the car. Having done all the calcs it looked like the max speed would be 198 mph believe it or not :( I long considered spending more money or further compromising the car to achieve it but have now decided to give up on that goal for the time being. For myself i might continue the goal with my ZX10R but that's another story.

One reason for this shift in thinking is that the car is fantastically agile out on the road. While there have been occasional teething problems (and still some to solve) this car has proven to be quite incredible to drive. So in keeping with the feel of the car next week we are fitting some further goodies which will give even more reason to smile. We have just fitted a 98+ gearbox new out of the box. Next week will be carbon prop, Quaife LSD with 4.1 Richmond gears (thanks to Nend). Following that Pete will be fitting some ali undertrays to help with cooling (and stop plastic bits falling off at speed haha). So car off the road for a couple of weeks but another track session beckons and will provide another update then :)

Your wife must be very understanding Bob!

Don't worry about the 200mph - if you ever get it up to 198, I'm sure you're not going to be bothered by those 2 last remaining miles per hour.. I think you're target should've been 300 all along.. km/h that is! In which case you'll smash it! Which makes this a positive and not a negative!

Good luck with the improvements

Fantastic. A very similar weight figure to what im expecting with my slicktop too.

The car is fantastic, and a credit to You, Pete and everyone involved with it.

Was the calculated 198mph based on the TT 3.69 gearing or your 4.1 ?

Look forward to hopefully seeing the car sometime. Are you bringing it to Japfest ?

let us know when the next session is, hopefully I'll join you :)

Sadly the 198 was based on TT gearing so will probably be a max of around 170 ish from now :(

Thanks for your comments guys. I do drive the car regularly and will definitely try to get to some meets this year. But why not join me at a trackday and we'll all have a lot more fun :)

would a bigger wheel or tyre not give you an extra 2mph due to the rolling radius??

Also bob be carefull of the carbon prop. jeff has had a few where the knuckel on the end had failed (metal to carbon) and i would imagen with your power it could be alot of stress??

Wondered if you might be attending Japfest, as Pete is a regular there. Its at Castle Combe, May 14th. I think all the Z only track sessions are booked up, but probably mixed sessions available if you decide to attend and there are always spaces becoming available on the day.

Hope to be able to join you on a track in the near future though :)

In actual fact the centrifugal force applied to the wheels at high speed should give a few extra millimetres and would 'probably' have put us around the 200 mark but it was still a pretty tough ask. In all honesty the goal was only ever an aside and I truly wanted a car that could do everything. If funds and motivation allow sometime in the future we'll get a six speed sequential from Australia and give it another go :) The prop is ACPT so should be fit for purpose. At least I hope so lol.

I don't think the car will be ready by then but as well Castle Coombe has very strict noise restriction and I doubt my car will pass. I've ridden the track a few times in the past and very enjoyable and fairly easy to learn. It would be really good to meet other zeds though so we shall see :)

upping the rev limit will do the job but not with the 4.1 rear end!

I was hoping to go to Japfest but have to pull out, car is still in the bodyshop for a respray :( Really enjoyed last years too...

Yes that's true but haven't got solid lifters and so am pretty restricted. Don't forget gears can always be changed so it's only put on the back burner for now :)

Looking good Bob, is it living up to your expectations? I'd love to see it in action.

Here's a few updates about the project. After about 3500 miles the engine needed a rebuild which is now done. Happy to say that it's running fantastic so far slightly down on power at 650rwhp but up on torque so it's a faster car in practice :) Good news is I do have solid lifters so once this year is out and have done time attack and TOTB I might consider changing diff and going for the top speed run again but don't hold your breath lol. Moved battery to the back and a few other minor mods subsequent to the last couple of test runs at silverstone and cadwell. Lost clutch at cadwell and it appears pipe burned through on the manifolds so that's sorted. Here's a link or two if you're interested :)
