Decided to have a look at the rust on my rear drivers side arch and when cleaned up the area around the spots of rust i decided to see how far the filler from a previous repair had gone - it looks like the whole panel has had a light layer of filler with some thicker bits where it has perhaps been dented causing the rust in the first place. What would you do if you had discovered this (see pics) on your zed? Whats the recommended repair procedure? The car will be resprayed within the next few months anyway.

Its got me wondering where else there's filler on the car! Look forward to your opinions.

Hi James,

That'd be my thoughts too mate - and you'll soon find out when the car goes in for a respray!

You can buy replacement weld-in arch panels. IIRC MIke at MJP (see traders section) sells them. Also I'd advise checking the sills in detail now - they often follow the arches....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I'm not really clued up on the processes of respraying - I've done painting on motorbikes with aerosols before but in doing so I've always taken back to bare metal - would they do this as part of the respray? It's been for an assesment at zedworld and Jeff mentioned that the rear sills needed cleaning up and painting but it was just surface for the time being so fingers crossed they are ok.

Cheers,

James

hi mate cant really tell on my screen but the panel seems to have alot of little black spots as a spot dent puller has been used a full respray does,nt entail bare metal but what is seen ,rust ,dents ,scuffs etc at the time ,a bare metal respray is available but to be honest you want deep pockets as no -one will price till every-thing is re-vield

A bare metal respray will be big money. When mine was painted we simply took off the existing laquer and top coat, then repaired any areas that required it and then covered the car in primer and then the base and top coats.

I would budget maybe £3000 for a bare metal respray - huge job!

get a magnet and go over the car it will stick well to the non filled areas and not as well to filled will at least give you an idea where filler is on the car

and the rest lol,to bare metal all glass plus plastics eg bumpers, handles will have to be re-moved,not to mention all lights etc i would say a week to a week and a half to bare metal then you,ve got to repair ,re-paint then put back to-gether looking at a months work flat out and thats if you dont find no nasties and your prob talking over £1200 of materials,my view this is others may differ

I think £1200 is a bit much for materials personally, I have to admit i ment to put £3000 plus lol

im doing a bare metal respray on my car, i would imagine i will spend at least 200 hours on it and even at £20 an hour its going to cost.

if you need any panels i will be cutting up my breaker and it has almost perfect rear arches.

fair point but how many linishing discs and da pads do you think it would take to bare metal a zed and before any-one mentions paint stripper as often happens ,what happens when it gets in to areas that cant be treated,(rust)plus think you,ll agree about 6-700 in paint ,primer, etch for the ali bonnett and laquer then you,ve got your filler and tape and paper, flatting paper, pre clean and stone chip ,i think you,ll find i aint far off lol

£700 for paint?! You need a new supplier! Hell... I'll be honest it was certainly mates rates but I did cover paint and material costs and paid them a little something but my respray was alot less than that all in! I know it wasnt bare metal but it was a serious job. I cant see how a bare metal would use anymore paint than a "normal" respray.

hi mate from your pics of your respray though yours was spot primerd in a few areas,so only them areas needed to be coloured then may-be a ghost coat over being silver a fully primed re-spray would have to be coloured all over, was yours done in solvent or water,so how much did you pay mates rates

my paint (clear over base, 2k laquer )was about £120 2k primer will be another 50, prob about 400 in total. thats to cover everything

if you can get enough black pearl plus laquer to paint a whole zed for £120,i must be doing somut wrong:confused1:

The total job including food etc cost me £450. Granted the lads owned me some favors and it should have been £1000 or so but I did help them, we did it over the easter weekend so thursday evening, friday and saturday

you got a bargain mate, but you paid 450 mates rates and the bumper and lights are still in and i assuming it a swb slicky (nice)but smaller and a bear metal would mean in all the areas you still got coverd?be-hind lights and rear panel etc lol were splitting hairs now may be materials are alot cheaper your way was it done in solvent

6 and 2 threes with the size of the cars, being a slicktop its got a solid instead of glass roof :) Only 6 inches shorter so they are a smaller car. Yeah I know it wasnt the absolute pristine job. No need to take the lights out really though as long as its masked properly and soft edged accordingly It was a bargain, I know that it should have been more than double at normal mates rates. Good friends of mine though, helped them out in many ways in the past. I took the car to bits and built it up though which of course helps!

Its all waterbased now apparently for environment reasons? That bodyshop i used has had to change over to comply or something??

The weird thing is I dont know whether I'm using a magnet either too strong or too weak but their doesn't seem to be any noticeable difference to the rear skimmed panel to any other panel on the car or even the exhaust for that matter - I did try this method to test for filler when I bought the car. Think it's going to be a case of spraying what I've taken off with some hammerite for now to stop it getting any worse - getting an arch repair kit and depending on what's required with the repair kit (dual skins??) either repairing the arch myself then sending it for respray or just giving the bodyshop the repair kit to do for me during the respray. I'm sure the last time I took it to a local body shop (a few months ago) they quoted between 800-1000 for a respray in the same colour.

Cheers,

James
