I quit today.

I don't want to use patches, inhalers etc. Just cold turkey.

I also don;t want to start stuffing my face and put on 3 stone.

Any tips or tricks or 1) resist temptation & 2) not pile on the pounds?

I gave up 6 years ago this month cold turkey.

I just stayed away from Smokers and kept myself busy.

Took about a month to lose the desperation of having a ciggy but you never loose the slight temptations!

I was already a fat bugger before I quit but I joined a gym a month after quitting and have lost weight and got fitter through doing so! You wouldnt have thought so to look at me but its the truth, honest guv!

Gum, chew gum like its going out of fashion.

1) it helps give your mouth something to do when it wants to inhale.

2) increased mastication (chewing) increases the production of the stomachs digestive acids - so any extra pounds you might be gaining due to face stuffing will be reduced a tiny bit.

3) put all the money you would normally spend on fags into a jar so that you have a visual aid - you will be surprised how quickly it will build up. This is pretty motivating on its own.

4) I found that lollies help as i know they are not great for you, but you can almost mimick the action of smoking with them. (ie bit of something sticking out your mouth, tappping as if removing ash etc) which helps with the habbit part of it.

5) if you drink tea or coffee, move over to a propper coffee (ie with coffee grounds etc) the cafine hit might reduce the need for nicotine. (all you have to do then is wean yourself off the coffee when your done lol)

Mate - best of luck with it all, and well done for making the first step - once you have done 3 weeks you should have broken the back of it (ie physical addiction)- and the rest is in your mind from then on.

Good luck - keep us posted

I used patches for only a couple of weeks and found it really easy but you do have to WANT to give up not.. just.. trying to give it a go ! , get your head round that and it does help no end bud !!

BTW best thing i ever did:thumbup::thumbup:

Take up the pipe. Seriously. I kicked a 17 year roll up habit that way. You still get the nicotine through the lining of your mouth and that helps until you learn not to inhale any more. Once you've stopped inhaling, it's easy to quit the nicotine.

Feck me mate thats a killer cure

I must of tried about 20 times to give up over the last 10 years. Then i went to the doctors and got tablets and now haven't touched one in 8 months

I gave up six years ago and started smoking again last August, I was soon back on 30 a day and quit again 18 Days ago.

I cant quit using Nicotine replacement, I find that it just wants to make me smoke as my body craves Nicotine however it gets it.

Every day write the number of days that you have quit on the back of your hand with a Biro. It serves as a constant reminder mentally of how you are doing, and if its on the hand that you would normally smoke with it might stop you lighting up on a whim as you look at it and feel guilty.

If I have a bad craving I drink a small glass of real Lemon Juice believe me its sharp taste will totally remove the mental craving for a good while.

Do excersise it always really helps to quit, if you do more than while you were smoking it somehow mentally gets behind the quitting process.

Brush your teeth more often, this really helps as I always find my teeth feel so much cleaner when I quit smoking. Its like they look and feel so much better so I brush them like 4-5 times a day for a while.

Chewing gum can also help, thing is if you say "I will just have the one" or " just while in drinking etc" the whole thing goes to shite. Really just resist the urge of even one and in no time you will be free of it.

Day 4 is always the worst for me if you get by that it becomes easier and easier, after a few weeks the cravings are minimal.

off them since jan of this year, i used the invisi patch for about 8 weeks and have to say had little or no nicotine cravings, it was more when i seen somebody with a cigarette i just wanted to mug them for it,

i didnt put on any weight while i was on the patches, however i did put on about 8 lbs when i stopped the patches, but that has now stopped as well.

try and stick with it, as we all know its not doing you any good at all, good luck stuart

Thanks all for your advise and comments. I think I'll gove most of the a shot.

Not sure about the pipe though, i don't want to attract sherlock holmes fans, this close to baker street.

20 hours now and going strong. It was very hard last night especially since the wife left her ciggarettes on the garden table and went out to tesco's,, so so tempting but I held off. (she is going down the tablet route startin 7th July to quit).

(she is going down the tablet route startin 7th July to quit).

I went down the tablet route and it worked well for me, been 7 months now and I don't even think about smokes anymore.

Be wary of the tablet route, they are not for everyone and depending what tablets you are on can have terrible side effects.

Good luck to you both.

Chris

I am another one that tried the tablets, worked very effectively for me and I had tried all other routes in the past with no luck (hypnosis, patches, cold turkey) I also suffered the vivid worrying dreams side effect that they warn you of which was not nice but worth it, as said though you do have to want to give up, many think they do but secretly are just looking for an excuse to start again.

Good luck, the money you will save and the difference you will feel, even no longer smelling of them makes it so worth it.

giving ups easy Stu - I have done it hundreds of times now

My tip is start again now before you struggle for a few months & start again anyway!!!

nothing worse than an ex smoker, but good luck to you. I know i should give up, but i enjoy it too much, although most of the time it is just habit. The cost and health issues should be enough not to smoke, but then again driving a zed can have the same effect

Grrr, you're not making it easy for me lol

i used the pills from the doctors and they made the taste and smell of fags so bad that i just didnt go near them again and ive been stopped for 8months now.

i packed in about 20 mins ago but ile be back on them by 9.15pm:whistling:

i gave up 3 months ago using the tablets altho they made me feel sick everytime i took them. I only took them for 2 weeks and then just done it through will power and have done pretty well, my only downfall is when im drunk i like to have a fag but i can smoke 1 and then not have one or want one the next day.

I did'nt want to give up but, 5 weeks ago I did using Champix tablets from the docs. I have gave up cold turkey a few times over the years but as I have never wanted to give up ended back on em.

I'l be priced out of the market soon anyway lol

I would say that you do have to WANT to give up, in most cases half the problem is admitting that you have a problem the other half is then doing something about it.

Quit monday just gone after getting back from Glastonbury.

Thing I find help me is I refer to myself vocaly and in my head as a non smoker or I dont smoke. Not that I'm quitting or trying to quit.

That and if im down the pub every time I really really wanna ciggy I neck a shot back, makes the pub expensive but I have some wicked nights out lol

I would say that you do have to WANT to give up,

Now that is 100% completely true. You need to be sick of them, not enjoy most of them any more and just be fed up of smoking.

Quitting because you know you probably should, or it would be a good idea to just never works, 90% will fail.
