Ok, I have a UK 94 TT Manual and am considering De catting it as I have been told I may gain a little extra power. Any opinions out there girls and guys.

i think anything newer than 1992 has to have cat for mot i , not sure if i can decat my 1991 either being a import

Hi white zed you can decat yours bud. Im not sure of the cut off date for it but i think its anything b4 93. I know its on the mot web site.

Endless topics on this, do a search but basically cats tend to preserve/protect failing turbo oil seals. So when the cats are removed, the back pressure is lost between the cat and the oil seal so oil leaks into the exhaust causing blue smoke. Often on overrun, but sometimes at idle or on boost.

Only option is new/recon turbos really which although it is possible im told to do with the engine in, its often easier to pull the engine out.

As far as I gather its not that the lack of cat causes the oil seal to go, it tends to show an already happening problem (and perhaps shorten the life) Although im sure people with other experience will say different.

My 95 TT is decatted and seems to be fine, no smoke what soever at anytime (a zed honest!) but it does look like the turbos have been replaced/refurbed at somepoint in its history. They are VERY clean!

could always fit sports cats, although i think they are a waste of money,

tbh I've ran a number of various Nissans without cats, i agree it does shorten the life of your turbos, but it does make a fair bit of difference to the car, ie throttle response is much nicer, my Zed decat which is why im currently replacing my turbos...:tongue_smilie:

and white Zed it doesn't matter if its an import its done by the age of the engine not when it was registered, in theory you could fit a 1969 440 V8 into an brand new car and it could be decat...

this thread is my fault, after barry visited me, we went for a drive, same spec cars, same years, both UK TT, both black, both lwb. but mine is about 400 cars newer.:whistling: but i seem to pull away more.

Mine is decatted with full Japspeed sytem. Unless ive got something else done, to my engine, (i dont know)

Baz your turbos are good mate, it will make em spool quicker and it breaths better.

Will pm you the bits we chatted about.

How much are we talking? I mean it could be driveline losses are higher in the other car? So gearbox oil and diff oil change might make the difference!

Regards mot I was always told ALL imports no matter what age had to be given the pre-cat emissions test

True but sonic's car is a UK model, so the tester will have the data, but it depends where you go, it seems some do some dont, pot luck :hammer:

Pretty sure from reading several posts on this topic that 300zx is not on the cat database so gets tested as a non cat model regardless of import/uk year model etc.

Correct its not in the database, but when i had mine done, the 300zx listed on a wall chart, with emissions data. Having said that the pillock who tested mine couldnt find it on the database and tested it as a 350z cos it was the nearest match (not) needless to say he has been sacked recently for being a knob :tt2:
