First of all i would like to say hi to all the guys on the forum and i should of really introduced myself in the newb section first, so forgive me diving straight in to my problems..

Well about 9 months ago my friend and i purchased a 300zx TT 1990 ,the car was brought as a non runner for £800 which seemed cheap as it had only done 3k on a brand new gearbox and the guy had owned it for 8 years and spent lots of money making it as powerfull as he could.

there is a dyno run printout with the car from 2004 showing 650bhp so the thought of owning such a beast made it an easy decision,,we soon got the car running after some fuel and a jump start, but it ploomed blue smoke from the N/S exhaust and it was missfiring lots.

after a compression test it was obvious that the pasenger side midle cylinder was not giving any compression,at this point we were going to sel the car on ebay for spares as it has uprtated susspention and four new tyres, plus the gearbox with reciept for £1,300 should of easily made our purchase price back with some proffit for a pint or two.

Unfortunatly the thought of getting it running again crept into our heads and we decided to strip the engine to see if it could be repaired,,after removing the cylinder head and dropping the middle piston out the bottom it was clear to see that te cahad been running way to rich and thus had caused the side of the piston to disintegrate.

we instlled a new piston and started to re build the engine back up,after the cylinder head was put back on my mum passed away and i spent several months looking after my father, last week i went back to the unit and started putting the other parts back on the car,i have got to the point where i am ready to put the main plenum chamber on but see lots and lots of air vacume pipes coming from everywhere and i honestly have no idea where they go,i have looked at several diagrams and drawings but they make no sence at all,as the drivers side has not been touched i have tried to follow the pipes from the wastegate valve on that side but see that they are not the same on the psseger side,i can only assume that due to all the added electrical gizmos in the glovebox consisting of apexi ecu overide computer and airflow and timing adjusters along with some other boost controlle systems in the car that things will be diferent from manufacturers layout of vacume pipes.

i realy need to be able to send some pics or pay someone to come to coventry to look at the situation or get hold of a diagram which i could follow to get the rest of the parts back on the car.

if anyone thinks they can help they are welcome to txt me there number and i would be hugely greatfull for any advise that they can offer.

Thanks

Anthony

oh gosh mee too, appart from the engine problem its a nice car only having done 90,000kms and its in black with the black leather :)

sounds like you got a bargain! but if you break it you'll easy get your money back.

best thing you could do would be to post a pic on here so we can see the pipes and give you more of a clue mate.

well its back together and i have only 3 pipes that i cant find where they go but i think now there are much more serious issues with it,shold i start a new thread for them?.

I have not attached any air intakes after all the work i have done i needed to see weather it actually fired up,,which it did but after a minute or two it started chucking jet black smoke from the exhaust and several plummes of constant smoke started to come up from the side of the engine on the passanger side ,and its still missfiring as it was when it was first stripped down,,any ideas to what i should check are welcome..

Get the car transported to a Z specialist or reputable engine builder buddy. It may be something small, it may be something terminal - but best to let an expert give it the once over :) best of luck!

yep i think your right, i have given myself a big pat on the back for getting this far and am sure that it will not cost too much for someone to look at it now it actualy starts up.

Mate your only in Coventry. There is Zedworld in Tamworth. Not far from you bud. Also there are alot of lads around the mids area to help.

well if i could find someone local to come and have a look it might save me some cash transporting it over to tamworth,i just hope that the smoke cumming up from next to the turbo is not from the head or its game over,,Also please answer me this one....on the diagrams i followed for the installation of the vacume pipes it states that there is a pipe off the compressor housing of the turbo, and in the big book i have it also shows a nipple and pipe from the metal housing but these turbos do not have one nor do they have any input for water pipes its only an oil pipe from the pressure swithch which runs to the turbo and one pipe off the actuator.

If you know anyone who could come and take a look at the car at its location at a unit in coventry maybee they would be able to tell me if there is any point in getting it transported to z world for further test as if its something bad i will just break the car or sell it as it is.

ok got a good progress report today, seems the misfire was due to a duff plug and the smoke from the side of the engine was oil that was sitting in and arrou nd the turbo housing from when it was laying arround in the unit for 7 months,,i think there are still isues with the piping of the car as there is defenetly some air leaks and i still have 3 pipes which i have no clue where they go,but all seems well and she ticked over for about 40 minutes and the temp was fine and fan come on and went off as it should, the oil pressure is not great but could be due to lazy sensor or switch which i am told is a common issue, does anyone know what measures i should take to run the new piston in, what rpm is safe and for how many miles etc.

First off good luck

With the first problem ring lands on pistons tend to fail because of det not running rich.

Until you have all your air leaks sorted your not going to be able to work out how well the engine is running.

Hi IIokey123, Coventry eh, Me too. I have had a stock 300 tt for some years now, although it has been on ramps and stands for the past 2 while i cut out all the rust and and replace with new.:sweatdrop: Nearly done. She had not run for that time untill just recently and barring a small issue with the boost gauge, ran fine. If it is of any use you are wellcome to look under the bonnet of mine. Alternately, let me know which pipes are in question and I will post photo's

wow and thank you i would like to take you up on your offer ov having a peek under the bonnet of yours it will help me lots :) please send me an email with your contact number on and i will phone you to arrange a suitable time for yourself for me to come and see the pipe layout..on a brighter note i made aboost leak detector today and have found many leaks and fixed them,on a down side it seems the rear gasket of the sump is leaking but not the end of the world i suppose.

  • Author

oh and another quk question now i have fixed 99% of the leaks and bloked off the 3 pipes that i cant work out where they go my boost guage on tick over is -5 and before fixing leaks it was at +7 what should it be when its ticking over ,the guage is an after market one plumbed into the top bar on the plenum chamber.

It should read minus at tickover (vaccuum) so it sounds like one or more of the pipes you blocked off was not helping.

The oil only turbo's aren't standard Z but if it made 650bhp they wouldn't be anyway. As mentioned the piston going down is more likely from detonation than running rich. Given that be very careful with it until it's set up properly again. It could be something as silly as it's got big injectors and someone replaced one with stock. Or it could be where someone's wound the boost up and the fueling system can't match the air going through - like I say, be very careful until it's been on a rolling road to check the fueling under load. I've duffed an engine in the past (strangely the same piston) through getting carried away with the boost.

Hi llokey, Have tried to send you my details by pm (private message)but it was not allowed, Maybe due to you not being subscribed yet, I don't know for sure. Maybe someone here can advise. I'm reluctant to post any of my contact details on the public forum, hope you understand. hope we can get it sorted soon.

Have sent you a couple of e-mails, 1 with contact details and another with some additional pipe work diagrams, hope you are able to open it ok

well,it drives but not too well it seems that it can be sat ticking over for 45 mins and will rev up with no problems it idles smooth and does not miss or blow any smoke at all,not even from cold, but once its on the road and you give it even a small ammount of boost there is quite a bit of blue smoke from the passenger tailpipe, then when it idles again it clears in a few seconds until its moving and under any pressure and the same happens,,is this turbo gone?

oops nope i did not get your e-mails,you can txt me your contact number on 07760 665 695
