Cheers buddy, more to come soon :D

I made the choice not to start it again until i'd finished fixing the little bits that would really affect how quickly i could get it running properly.

SO i've:

* fixed the lambda sensor problem - when i'd pulled the wire through it had knocked the connector out so just plugged it back in

* tested the sender on the fuel pressure and it's dead so ordered a spin in gauge that fits on the regulator in the engine bay (looks bling and also saves me keep going round to look at the dash)

* hooked up the alternator light with a diode and it works!

* finished off the fan wiring and tested it with a heat gun - starts up and although i'm only running one fan it's got some guts to it! I think i still need to mount it flush to the rad though so something to do after it's on the road so long as it keeps the car spot on temperature which i'll test tomorrow when i start it up and tune it

Just the gearbox oil to fill up tomorrow when i get back from work and we're ready for start, time and tune take 2 :)

Off to bed now folks and fill you in tomorrow with another vid to wet your appetite with more revs and some exhaust cam :hyper:

Hmmm let me think about that on, sounds like a good deal to me.... hey wait! :taz:

That sound coupled with your smile makes me want to go and spend money!

Haha, well to build that engine will cost you close to 6k and the total build including all the free bits i got with the car has come to about 9k so realistically to do the whole thing from start to end again buying all the bits in and the engineering costs would set you back about£12k so you'd better get saving

Realistically though you could buy a running chevy 350 block and get it all in for under 5k then the skies the limit with performance! Superchargers, nitrous, twin turbos, 1000bhp+ easily available

Fantastic Nick, sounds great, very pleased for you.

Thanks mate, it's been worth all the effort - on the home straight now! :punk:

so as it only set you back £15.90, its up and running, youve been driving it around and you're now bored of it... i'll give you £30 for it... yes i hear you say? excellent, en-route!

Hmm let me think about that in a years time - you've got first dibs :scooter:

Im new on here and just read this whole thread start to finish. 1 word, EPIC!!

I love your dedication. Sounds great.

Congratulations mate

Thanks Jim :D You've arrived at the right time, it's just about finished and ready to hit the road after 2 years of hard work! Hopefully see you at the shows buddy! :)

Well update for the weekend. I was off out all of Saturday at the beetle show at santa pod then off to the pictures in the evening so didn't get stuck into the car till today.

Found quite a few leaks on the V8 which i've had to sort out to get any further:

- There was oil leaking out the back of the block which i initially though was the remote oil filter bolt on which was causing hideous amounts of smoke to come up off the exhaust manifold heatwrap which i finally sourced to the intake manifold and the oil pressure sender. That's now been PTFE taped and put back in and hopefully should stop it.

- Also found the intake manifold had loosened off so dad's picking up some torxs head bolt replacements and i'll use some thread locker to seal them in when i pop them back in. This was causing water to run down the front of the block picking up some oil that was seaping under the rocker cover. Torqued up both and the drip stopped.

Started work on the bracket to take the 300zx throttle cable and checked the movement of that and the throttle mechanism and worked out the throttle had to move 60mm on the carb and the 300zx accelerator pedal moves 55mm so just have to hook it all up then grind back the pedal stop to make it match the carb.

Started also making a bracket for the fuel pressure regulator which is a piece of cake and should tidy up the engine bay.

I'm also moving the power steering pot from the usual place to where the battery usually goes which i'll be doing over the next week. I've also stripped down the fuse box, removed anything i didn't need and pulled the whole wiring loom through the hole under the lights so clean up the panel it usually sits on.

Need to grind down the mounting brackets, bolt holes and smooth off the arches then paint them.

Tested the alternator is working by using a voltmeter on the battery and hey presto it's charging and pulling 13.5 volts+ all the lights work.

The only thing that doesn't work is the power steering which is worrying me slightly but i'll come to that when i come to that when the engine is 100% spot on.

My phone was on charge all night so haven't had it there to take any photos but things are coming together nicely now and the engine bay will be finished by the end of this week as will the engine and i'll be able to drive it round the driveway for the first time by next weekend fingers crossed! :hyper:

What a crap slow week it's been:

Sunday night was the last chance i've had to work on the car,

Monday night was spent completely re designing a website i look after that got hacked,

Tuesday night was the first time i've been back to the pub quiz in 6 weeks,

Wednesday I was up at 6am doing graphic design before work then last night i got back and was so exhausted i fell asleep till 10pm,

Tonight is a works treasure hunt round a local village so i'll be out till gone 10pm again,

Tomorrow night i'll get a couple of hours in the evening on it before the other half arrives then i'll be celebrating our 6 month anniversary on Saturday all day so no car work allowed then i'll be sending her on her way on Sunday morning before I end up getting nothing done again (sounds harsh i know but last weekend was the same and she ended up stopping till monday morning and i got 3 hours on the car and that was it)

So Sunday will be a day of getting the engine to run without any leaks, fill the diff and drop it off it's stands and hopefully drive it out the garage and spin it round the other way! :hyper:

Got a few little tidy up jobs to do like relocating the power steering pot to where the battery used to go and clamping all the wires and pipes up neatly round the engine bay.

I've also got some rubber cushion mounts to go under the fuel pump which should hopefully quiet it down a little bit as it's a bit OTT at the moment bolted into the bodywork!

More to come as i get chance to do it. Might try and do the fuel pump tonight when i get back as a quick 20 minute job.

More to come as i get there :)

Where has the last couple of weeks gone!

Last night I finally had chance to get under the car for an hour or so and fill the diff up and just had enough diff oil to do it. Also managed to finish the bracket to hold the fuel pressure regulator on the bulkhead. Just need some plastic push in screw holes for the battery area to take the power steering pot and trim and solder some wires and i'll be done in the engine bay.

I've ordered an alarm to be fitted next Tuesday morning and opted for the Clifford Concept 650 mk2 G5 so i'll be Thatchams category 1 covered for insurance and then i can put the interior back in again at last and give the leather a good clean and everything a hoover.

I've also sent off the V5 adjustment to bump the engine capacity up to 6273cc with a vehicle inspection report and some photos. So only insurance to do next week and after i hit the magic 30 years old on wednesday i'll be able to get a better quote from more companies fingers crossed! (about the only benefit of turning the big 3-0! lol)

I'm off next week all week which i was going to use to take a break in Cornwall but it looks like the headgasket is on the way out on the coupe and i want to get the V8 finished and mot'd by friday so looks like i'll be in the garage all week!

So nothing exciting to show at the moment so i'll wait until i've finished the engine bay before i post any pictures up of it complete.

I'll be on it again tonight doing some wiring then get it warmed up and set the fan thermostat for the right point.

If that all works and i've eliminated the leaks i'll drop it off the stands tonight and have a quick run round the driveway tomorrow night :hyper:

Sounding good there mate and moving along i also have the same alarm its worth it's penny's ;) did you opt for the warn away feature?

 • Author

I can't remember if that was included in the price but he did talk about it over the phone so might be a bolt on feature later on. Only problem is it's going to spend most of its life in a garage so i won't really be using that feature plus it'll get annoying on campsites late at night at the shows :)

Good news everyone, i know i've been very quiet this last week but i've been going through the process of putting in an offer on buying my first house so that's taken priority on my week off.

So what have i been up to on the zed? Well i've been fixing leaks, tidying wires up, making a new loom, shortening pipes, creating custom brackets to secure everything and generally getting the car ready to drop off its stands.

I also had the security system fitted, i opted for a Clifford Concept G2 in the end which is a cracking kit especially the microwave sensor rather than the ultrasonic sensors and all the groovy extras you can bolt into it.

So today was D day, the first time i've ever tried to drive the car under its own steam.... and it works!

The weird thing is it drives like a very tightly put together zed, no rattles or squeaks, in fact so good i forgot i had no brakes and nearly rolled out into the road

Tomorrow night i'll be bleeding the brakes and cleaning off the discs before putting the new wheels on and refitting the interior then we'll be just about ready to book it in for its MOT either this coming week or the beginning of the next.

Tbh i was aiming to get to santa pod this coming saturday for japshow finale but i'd rather run a little bit behind and make sure it's all working.

I'll grab a video tomorrow for you all but till then thats all folks :)

Good stuff Mate!

It's a shame you won't make Jap Show Finnale! I sould be there with my manual box to see if I can beat my PB of 13.7sec. Maybe the Z1 intercoolers will help?!

Hope the weather isn't like last year!!!

 • Author

Just to keep you all entertained, it was raining , the targas were off but damn it's good to be back behind the wheel of a zed :punk:

Watch it in 720p for the best sound/video (

)

Still got to order the proper exhaust studs and replace the gasket (the tapping noise) and fix the one loose connection on the light but it's nearly there and feeling very much like a zed but with a stupidly horny engine under the bonnet :D

Who's Mr Happy doing the filming? Lol. Not long now fella.
